Blue screen when trying to install XP Pro on a fresh machine

It boots up and goes through all the loading stuff until it says "Starting Windows". Then I get a blue screen. It says something like Plug and Play has detected an error that most likely is caused by a software driver. I haven't installed any software as this is a freshly built machine with a brand new hard drive. The stop error is 0x000000CA

Someone please help!

Thanks, but no it's not related. I also searched Microsoft and coudn't find anything. I guess I should have mentioned that before.

Any 'weird' hardware on the machine (media readers, multiple cd's, anything that might be strange?). Based (only) on that KB article, sounds like XP might have problems if it detects multiple devices where it can't (for some reason) tell them apart. Ring any bells on your system?

Sounds like a IRQ conflict,

Pull out every card in your system except video card and unhook any external devices except keyboard, PS2 mouse if you have one and of course your monitor, then reinstall. If that works then install one card at a time, and then any external devices, one at a time and reboot after each install.

Good Luck!

One more thing, if your motherboard has onboard audio and you have a sound card make sure you disable the onboard audio in the bios prior to installing OS,

Here's what I have in the machine:
Athlon XP2500
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
512MB PC2700
GeForce3 ti200
1 Western Digital 80GB hard drive
1 Liteon Cd-Rom
1 Floppy drive

That's it. I am planning to use the onboard sound so I don't have any other sound card or anything. I think tomorrow I am going to try to remove and re seat the video card and ram, and then maybe try a different ram stick. If that doesn't work I'm out of ideas again.

betting the memory . got 2 sticks ? try with just one . no go , try the other by itself. XP's install seems to be VERY memory intensive.
good luck

Try it with a pci video card. I had the same problem, found that solution on anandtech and it worked!
