Blue screen unmountable_boot_volume error " help

Hi,

I have a Dell inspiron 1100 laptop running windows XP home edition. Today when trying to boot the computer I get a blue screen error stating " unmountable_boot_volume " error, which is a dead end loop. I get an option to go to safe mode or selective boot only to lock up and be back to the unmountable boot volume error. Any way to work around this? Thanks

I wouldnt bother calling Dell tech support, they only thing they are going to be able to do is to walk you through formatting and starting over.

It sounds like the file system is damaged; here is a good place to start:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q297185/

Pay close attention to the suggestions in the "damaged file system" section regarding booting to the recovery console and using chkdsk to try and recover the volume.

Also whenever in doubt and you have an error I suggest Googling the error

Good luck,
Erik
