Blue screen Re-Installing Win98

When trying to re-install Win98 to resolve some error with the current install.
Booted from the Win98 Startup Disk and selected CD-Rom support.
The first part of the install looks good and no errors coping the files.
When attempting the first re-boot the system will shutdown correctly but locks up on the boot with a blue screen. If I do the Ctrl-Alt-Del the only thing in the program list is "Pnpwtape". I do not have any tape drives attached.

Compaq Deskpro 4000
Pentium II - 300mhz
320mb memory
Install is on a 2gb drive with plenty of free space.

First off, make sure there is no proprietry hardware with that system, otherwise, you are going to need to use the (it came with the computer) recovery disks/cd. Good luck.
 
There is no recovery disks/cd. when I got the PC about a year ago the first thing I did was FDISK and install a Clean copy of Win98SE. Perfer not to wipe it again and loose the files on my C: drive.
 
Have you tried starting in safe mode? Sounds like maybe some drivers got corrupted during the re-install. If you can get into safe mode, try re-installing chipset, video, etc drivers.

He He, they are pretty much completely proprietary..That's what makes it interesting during installs/re-installs.
 
No luck with Safe mode, not enough is installed yet.

PS. since I also have WinXP installed in a hidden C: patartions using Boot Manager. If I could copy my old OutExpress Mail messages there would be less to loose. Anyone know which
file(s) to import from.
 
Hmm. Well I think the fact you are trying to install Win98 over an existing C: partition WinXP is your problem. Otherwise, please clarify more on what you mean by "not installed enough".

Sorry for the confusion, I am not tryin to install on top of WinXP. Below is the jist my configuration using Partition Magic as the Boot Manager.

C: Win98 - 2Gb (Fat32)
C: WinXP - 4Gb (NTFS) with one hidden at all times.
D: Programs
E: Data
F: Misc
G: CD-Rom

When trying to install Win98 I make sure the Win98 C: drive is the active partition.

I did not successfully get through enough of the install to even boot in Safe mode.

I will keep trying different options as time allows and do appreaciate all suggestions.
 
Bit the bullet and formated the drive again. Install went smoth just lost my old emails and bookmarks.
 
Don't want to rain on the parade but if you booted into DOS from the 98 CD you could have used copy to copy over all your bookmarks & email messages to another partition. Now granted the bookmarks end up looking like something that came from hell after DOS gets done moving them with its limited file name support but if you don't remember the sites it is still a good choice.

It worked for me two weeks ago when I had to do a clean install of XP on my machine 🙂
 
Did copy a number of the files and have saved my contacts. What file(s) do I need to look for for my bookmarks and old emails?
 
For Windows 98

Bookmarks:
Windows | Favorites

Outlook 2000 (I think it might also work for Express, so check)
Windows | Application Data | Microsoft | Outlook
 
Well missed that directory. At least I have my contacts still and a fresh install.
