blue screen error MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION

after having trouble installing 2 new Corsair RAM (2x1gb) modules (computer would blue screen and give mean IRQ error message) I finally fixed the problem by updating the BIOS. now however, my machine frequently bluescreens and dies with an MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION message. does anyone have any idea of what this message means and how to fix the problem? often, but not every time this happens, my system HD makes a strange noise, but it does not happen every time. also, sometimes when I reboot after an bluescreen event, windows will not boot, it will go through the windows loading screen but not actually go into windows when done loading, after another reboot windows will load.
