earlier today my pc started making a clicking noise in the pc.

it sounded like it was going to die and turn off.. but my mouse kept lagging and the screen would freeze for a second.

later I ended up restarting and when it gets to the windows loading screen it flashes a blue screen, then restarts.. I tried putting in the OS cd to reinstall windows, and c: (the partion) didn't have NFTS or anything listed, and it said it was damaged.. so I had to format the drive and then start the install.. I did that and when it was in the middle of the install it made the clicking noise again and my mouse wasn't working.

do you think I could have a bad hdd? something isn't connected properly? ..or what?

I have another hdd so that's fine.. but I just want to be positive that it's the problem.

do you know if it would normally make a ticking noise like that? it was really odd, and the first time i've heard it.

well.. I swapped my 80gb WD hdd out with a 300gb maxtor.. I created an 80gb partion to install the OS on, and was going to allocate the rest of the space after I got windows loaded.

for some reason my hdd controller isn't installed by default so I always have to install a driver to show the hdds.. but in the past I could never get the controller to show by pressing f6 in setup and loading some files.. so i decided to just put my OS hdd on the same IDE cable as my cdrom.. my hdd is set as the master, and the cdrom is slave.. this worked before.

after I put my hdd in I turned my computer back on to install windows on the new hdd and created my partion.. yadda yadda.. everything worked fine til it restarted to goto the GUI version of installing windows (39 minutes left) ..and now it's saying..

The file 'asms' on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD is needed. Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

I searched for the error and found this: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=311755 .. i tried method 1 under NFTS but regedit doesn't load.

but anyways my problem is that it's not detecting my cdrom anymore for some reason, so it can't load the files off from it, the only thing it detects is my floppy drive.. does anybody know how I can fix this? without having to take my hdd off the cdrom ide cable and having to load the files to enable the hdd controller?

nevermind..

I had the jumper on 'master' ..and I looked at the hdd I previously had in and it had jumper settings for master and master w/ slave.. so I changed the jumper to CS Enabled and switched the ide cables around.. and it's at 34 minutes now, without prompting me with the previous 'asms' files.
