Blue screen after installing KM2M

Hi. I really badly need some help.

I just bought a new motherboard : MSI KM2M (MS-6738)

http://www.msicomputer.com/pro...M_Combo-L&class=mb

I've connected all the cables fine. I have a 450 W power supply.

My computer starts up fine. BIOS finishes checking everything fine. Then, I get the "Verifying DMI Pool Data...". And then I get a message from Windows saying that the hardware/software environment has been changed since the last time Windows loaded (it should be saying this since I have a new motherboard). It gives me options of 3 different types of Safe Mode (normal, with networking, with the command prompt), the last successful Windows configuration and the normal Windows mode. I select the normal Windows mode and then the screen goes blank for a while. And then a blue screen error flashes and the computer restarts. I can't even give you details about the blue screen error since it flashes really fast.

I even tried reparing Windows with its installation disk but the computer restarts when it is loading all the setup files for Windows.

I have checked my 2 SD-RAM memory slots and they seem to be working fine. I have swapped them in all the various slots and even tried them on their own. It still gives me the same output.

I really really need somebody's help on this.

Your problem sounds like chipset drivers. If you didn't reinstall windows after installing the new mobo, the HD has the old system on it, with the chipset drivers from the old mobo. That won't work with the new mobo. The new mobo needs it's own chipset drivers to work.

I beleive a reformat and fresh install is the best. But if you just can't bear it, Here's an article that says how to change mobo's w/o a fresh install.

Good Luck with it

I have tried reparing my Windows XP version with its installation disk. But when the CD is copying all the setup files required (I'm sure there are many tasks Windows must perform before beginning installation or repairing the current XP version on the hard disk), I get a blue screen again and the computer restarts. The same result basically as stated in my original post.

Maybe as a last resort I can try installing on a new or different hard drive to see if it gives me the same results or not.

Do let me know if you can think of any other solutions.

Pratik,

Either read the article I linked above, and follow the steps outlined therein. Or reformat and reinstall, you'll lose the existing data on the old HD, but you can then install winXP.

You are experiencing chipset driver problems, that's all.

I finally read the article recommended by Fern (thanks! it was helpful).

But despite the great article, I still face problems.

One of the solutions that is given by the article is to use a Windows XP installation CD to repair the current version I have installed on the hard disk. I have tried that. While the CD is processing preliminary tasks to repair Windows, it restarts again (and if I remember right then it displayed a quick blue screen before restarting as well - basically the same problem that I was having earlier). During the 'pre-repair' process, the CD displays the tasks in the lower-left corner of the screen. I remember very well that the last message before the computer restarted was "Setup is now loading Windows .... ".

Would making a bootable floppy disk help in trying to install the new motherboard drivers from a CD??

I'm not sure about this idea though.
