Blue screen after installing KM2M

Hi. I really badly need some help.

I just bought a new motherboard : MSI KM2M (MS-6738)

http://www.msicomputer.com/pro...M_Combo-L&class=mb

I've connected all the cables fine. I have a 450 W power supply.

My computer starts up fine. BIOS finishes checking everything fine. Then, I get the "Verifying DMI Pool Data...". And then I get a message from Windows saying that the hardware/software environment has been changed since the last time Windows loaded (it should be saying this since I have a new motherboard). It gives me options of 3 different types of Safe Mode (normal, with networking, with the command prompt), the last successful Windows configuration and the normal Windows mode. I select the normal Windows mode and then the screen goes blank for a while. And then a blue screen error flashes and the computer restarts. I can't even give you details about the blue screen error since it flashes really fast.

I even tried reparing Windows with its installation disk but the computer restarts when it is loading all the setup files for Windows.

I have checked my 2 SD-RAM memory slots and they seem to be working fine. I have swapped them in all the various slots and even tried them on their own. It still gives me the same output.

I really really need somebody's help on this.

In other words, when you tried that repair, you were booting off of the XP CD, and it restarted in the middle of that?

That's a hardware issue.

Your PC's inability to boot sounds like a Stop 7B due to incompatible IDE drivers. The quick fix for that is to put your old MB in there, change to Standard IDE drivers, and then put the new MB in there. That's assuming the HAL's the same between the two (ie when you go DeviceManager/Computer and look under that, it must say the same thing.)

The problem I'm facing right now is that the old motherboard I had is not working (which is exactly why I got a new one in the first place).

Would making a bootable floppy disk help in trying to install the new motherboard drivers from a CD??

I'm not sure about this idea though.

Btw, what is HAL?

If the new board isn't working, you're SOL without going through a lot of work. It would probably be easiest to do an upgrade in place install (ie boot from the XP CD and basically install XP to the same c:\windows directory) so you'll then get bootable, but the fact that you can't boot the XP CD and reliably copy files tells me you're wasting your time - you need to fix that hardware problem first.

A HAL is a hardware abstraction layer.

I understand that I need to solve the hardware problem first. I think the solution basically lies in installing the new motherboard drivers.

I wouldn't mind installing over my current C:/Windows, but the problem is the current hardware problem just won't let me do it. The computer restarts after copying some setup files when Windows wants to install.

I was thinking of booting from a floppy disk drive, uninstalling my old drivers (with the CD that was provided) and re-install new drivers (from the CD that is provided). Like I said though, I'm not sure if this will work or not.

I hope to try that out tonight. Do warn me if this sounds dangerous though. :)

If you're booting from CD while you're trying to copy over those setup files (ie doing a normal XP install) and it restarts/crashes, you have a hardware problem, and this has absolutely nothing to do with drivers.

But I've checked everything from memory to PSU to making sure the cables are fine. I guess the last thing could be the hard disk itself ( :( ). Which won't be good news indeed since I have a lot of valuable stuff on there.

I have a spare hard disk so I guess I can experiment on that.
