I was wondering when the blue ray wave is going to hit the market? I see that you can purchase a blue ray burner from sony for a ridiculous $700 on newegg but I mean come on that is way overpriced and plus you cant even watch blue discs yet. So anyone know when these will actually be useful?and affordable?
 
It's BluRay. And tbh no-one knows whether BluRay or HD-DVD will come out on top (my guess is the latter). The other could see a similar fate to the Betamax (rival to VHS). The PS3 will also be a BluRay player though, so that's when the players will become more commonplace imo.

I remember buying at my old job, a 1x SCSI cd burner that cost 800 bucks. Blanks were around 50-65 bucks EACH!

My home DVD player (which I still use) cost me 1200 bucks and it wasnt even first generation. Of course it also plays my LDs. 🙂 but now you can buy a player for well under a 100 bucks and in a lot of cases under 40 bucks. Its almost like they are disposable. I dont predict either winning. Most likely as it becomes more mainstream the players/burners will probably support both. Remember when it was + or - DVDs? Well, both are supported on basically all burners now and some even support DVDRAM as well.

i think BlueRay will come out on top just because sony is pushing it out so much. there's some computers and laptops with BlueRay already (albeit expensive) but i've yet to see something with HD-DVD. plus, those interested in gaming and having larger storage than DVD wouldn't mind getting a 2-in-1 (PS3) so that'll probably put BlueRay even more ahead of HD-DVD

You can indeed, you can't if you want to watch HDCP protected media (as you'd need Vista (no idea if the beta does it)), but that isn't around as far as i know yet. This could be the source of the confusion/error?
 
quite a while. atleast with cd no matter how expensive it was, u knew it was CD and not gonna be some has been obsolete format so u could be secure with your purchase.

Toshiba has HD DVD laptops out.
 
I remember paying over $900 for my first CD burner back in 1993 - a Pinnacle Micro, SCSI external. CDR blanksd ran about $4 each. So - the moral of the story is, be patient and the prices will drop - especially if no one is buying. The kicker will be several 3rd party OEMs competing for our $$$.
 
You can watch them now.. you need a TV with HDCP and a blueray player, which is around 1000 or so.. not sure if you could do it with a video card with HDCP, but you probably need Vista... I heard you need a 64bit vista and not the 32bit, something having to do with making it harder to rip off

this is excellent. currently its 1 layer each if dual format i believe. thats no good. but having a full hdddvd + dvd backwards compatibility is excellent. people love portable dvd players and such, so a parent buying a film on hddvd doesn't have to worry about not being able to play it on their cars dvd player and such. hd formats aren't going to be in portable form or let alone adopted by lots of people any time soon. this can only help. nothing sucks like being double dipped. llike with psp films... which really should have come with the dvd to justify their cost.
 
BluRay is awesome. It will make the price of blue semiconductor lasers drop astronomically eliminating the requirement for expensive and delicate DPSS lasers. Bring it on. 😀

Blu-Ray is being pushed much more that HD-DVD (at least at the B&M retailers), and frankly, I'm intrigued by the technology. However, what about the possibility of download movies overshadowing these new formats, just as music downloads did with the CD/SACD/DVD-Audio discs? It was the same premise: hi definition audio, multi-channel, etc., but download music all but wiped popular adoption of either SACD/DVD-Audio. Maybe the same thing will happen to Blu-Ray and HD-DVD?

I do like what they deliver, but are people willing to pony up the $$$ for a 1080p HD set and Blu-Ray player? Or are people content with DVD's and lower quality download video - and just demand more of the same?

I wonder if Sony's fearing this scenario...

You are correct, Microsoft has claimed that 64-bit vista will be required for HDCP. But - are current Blu-ray movies actually HDCP-enabled?
 
I would assume so.. it was one of the big issues with blue ray.. .since the current movies are not really that HD more like upconverted DVDs they might not have used it

BR looks good for consumers (larger fixed capacity,) HD-DVD looks good for manufacturers (mainly cheaper/easier to implement from a manufacturer's standpoint.)

i want the first dual player one.

funny you should mention that! the answer is NO -- the US (not so sure on the rest of the world) realized that the large part of the current HD televisions don't have HDCP -- basically you can safely assume if your hdtv was made before september of 2005 you don't have hdcp.

evidently studios are waiting for people to replace their gear. i understand that full implementation of HDCP won't happen for a few years.

but that's pretty much fair warning as far as i understand it. it's available, it's a spec, the movie studios can impose it whenever they want.


 
I was reading in Maximum PC they were trying to play HD-DVD on what they knew was a fully HDCP compliant system, couldn't get it to work. Meh, we'll figure it out. Only difference is, we'll have resentment towards the movie industry so won't feel bad about doing it. It's like with CDs now. You have to be really careful that it's not re-recordings or done by some no-name band. You can't figure it out by the cases. But if you open it to find out, you can't return it. The entertainment industry is using us, sad to say, and they get upset at the reaction. Technology advances, there will be affordable terabyte hard drives and someone will crack it and post how to do it all over the net. Fair warning? Who's threatening who?
