Blue Ray quality movies...streamed?

I am wondering the quality of the movie you receive if you have a service like Netflix, what quality of movie are you gettting, what format?

Does it come 1080p?
Does it come Blue Ray quality?

Thanks for any input...

Vudu can technically stream in 1080p and 5.1 audio, but it is nowhere near Blu-Ray quality.

Netflix can also do that on some devices, but again, not blu-ray quality.

It depends on your internet speed. At times I get a message that my internet connection has slowed and playback is being adjusted accordingly.

That said HD movies from Netflix look better than a DVD but not as good as a bluray disk.
If you don't have a 5mb connection their website says you can't get HD>

"Blu-ray" - without the "e" 😉

It isn't possible to match the bitrate of Blu-ray with consumer Internet connections in the USA. The Vudu commercial saying "Blu-ray quality" is an outright lie. Resolution does not equal "quality."

Vudu is pretty close in quality. At least psychovisually (real word?), if not technically.

For Netflix, a lot depends of the video. Most hover at somewhere between DVD and Bluray depending on the source.

Thank you for understanding that. Far too many people just assume 1080p....must be high def! Nope. Bitrate is the real player there. And no, streaming services can not match it.

Netflix is fantastic, but not blu-ray quality. I use Netflix to watch TV shows more than anything, I don't subscribe to cable.

However, it gets to the point where the quality is "good enough." We're at that point with HD streaming right now. I still think Blu-ray is going to end up being a blip on the media map, much like laser-disc.

No we aren't and I weep whenever I hear people say that. When we settle for mediocraty then thats all the more we get from the studios/content providers.

Blu-Ray is usually over 40mbps...often a LOT more.

No, Netflix doesn't touch Blu-Ray quality.

We haven't even come close to that point. The quality difference between component and hdmi with blu-ray is big enough to notice, streaming vs disc is huge. The fact that you think blu-ray is no more important than laser disc was just shows either how completely ignorant you are on the technology or that you are trolling. Given your history... probably both.

Can I tell the difference between blu-ray and a decent streaming movie or show? Yes. Do I care about it for the majority of stuff I watch? No.

I don't care if most of the TV shows I watch are perfect quality. I get more enjoyment out of watching whatever I want whenever I want for much less money than I would if I had to go out and buy/rent the physical media. There are some movies that I think the visuals warrant getting a blu-ray and for those I'll go out and buy it, but other than that the streaming quality is "good enough".

Not only that, but pre-encoded multi-pass bits are much better than dynamically encoded live streaming bits. It's why a DVD cam that records straight to high bit-rate MPEG2 looks worse than a studio-encoded retail disc from a higher-quality source.

Like I already said, I use Netflix primarily for TV shows. For movies I prefer the media.
