Blue ray players ?

Is it common to have to turn up the volume a lot when watching a blue ray?

I ask this because I have a PS3 and anytime I use it I always have to turn up the volume up a lot more from when I was watching tv be it a normal show or a movie on tv

I think so. Might have something to do with the increased dynamic range of sound volume.
On my PS3 i regularly have to set my onkyo 607 to ~30-35 when playing blurays, whereas netflix is ~20-25, and video games ~15-20 (I don't play video games as loud as movies).
Similar volumes with my PC when set to bluray/netflix. DVDs are also around 20-25.

If you have an older PS3, and are decoding BD audio on the console, the volume will be lower than normal. If you have a newer PS3 that allows for bit streaming HD codecs, the sound will be closer to the standard volume of your other devices.

I have to when I watch them on my tv that doesn't go through a receiver.

I can confirm that, HTPC volume has to be on max and AVR has to be around -25 to -20 to fill the room with enough "boom" and be able to hear people (not talking loudly/whispering)

For FM radio, AVR cannot be above -45, speakers start trembling.

BTW, is your system calibrated for audio?
