I was looking through newegg today and found this.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16827136124

the model number is for the SATA but newegg says its the IDE...oh well

I was just wondering if there is a internal HD-DVD drive out on the market right now. I have seen the HP and toshiba externals but just wondering if it would be cheaper to buy 2 drives a blue-ray and hd-dvd instead of the combo drive from LG.

Wow, haven't seen that one. VERY nice, however that price needs to come down quite a bit. I wonder if it can do BD-J.

Does it it seem like we've been waiting for well over a year, now?

I'm a little disappointed. Why couldn't they put more logos and script on the faceplate?

And the price? Why is it so cheap? This model is clearly worth $1,099-$1,199 ... or more

And to think at that low price you get write speeds of 8X in DVD-r and 16x in CD-r and (gasp!) 4x DVD-r-dl.

Wow. Whadda deal. Let's not pass this one up.

IDE is different from SATA and PATA, which refers to the interface technology used. Thats a SATA drive you linked to.

Sure, its BluRay and HD-DVD, but about 800 dollars more than I'm willing to pay.

That's pretty sweet, it reads both blu-ray and hd-dvd, and also burns blu-ray as well as dvd-ram, dvd-+r and dvd-+r-dl, it will probably drop down to around $500 within the year, then I'd consider buying it.

I know the diff between ide and sata...I was just pointing out that newegg got the info wrong. they said it was the IDE model yet had the SATA model number listed

BD-J would be a function of your player software, not the drive. I would imagine the player software is also tacking a fair bit of cost onto these drives, speaking of which.

And, yeah, a grand is a bit much. $200 would be more my price range. At least this one has SATA - I think a few of the earlier ones were IDE. Ick. I don't even have IDE peripherals in my desktop anymore.

I read something somewhere that the reader-only combo drives are going to run around $400 . . . surely that can't be right. I figured a couple hundred, but not four.

I read that somewhere too. I would much rather have a drive that just read blue-ray and HD-DVD. unless the price for blank BD-r disc comes down along with the players then I dont see the point in burning to BD at least at a cost perspective...1 BD-R is what 12 bucks if ur lucky that burns 25gb...yes its high def but...I can get 50 DVD+R for about the same price and have 235gb. also I dont see the need for BD burners to burn DVD and CD media. ya thats cool..but I wouldnt wanna use my $999 drive to burn DVDs when I have a $30 drive right under it. lets face it...optical drives usualy dont last too long before they have problems...why risk damaging a $999 burner on a .50 cent DVD

my brother lives in Japan and is trying to pick one up for me, although he says the internal readers are out of stock the buffalo external versions are available.

Oh and it seems that newegg has stopped carrying the previous $1000 model combo drive. That probably means they are getting the new ones in soon!

bestbuy link is down, if its $299 and can read both then thats interesting (and basically means the format war is a draw), but it would be better if it was $399 or even $499 and could write to both, as once disk prices come down it would be useful for archiving and backup).
