Veteran of a thousand psychic wars

You see me now, a veteran
Of a thousand psychic wars
I've been living on the edge so long
Where the winds of limbo roar
And I'm young enough to look at
And far too old to see
All the scars are on the inside
I'm not sure that there's anything left of me

"This ain't the summer of love," snarled Blue Oyster Cult singer Eric Bloom, resplendent in studs and black leather, back in 1976 on the band's platinum-plus best seller, Agents of Fortune, and the sentiment is perhaps even more revealing today.

Blue Oyster Cult's new album, "Cult Classic" on Herald Records, distributed by Caroline, includes state-of-the-art digital re-recordings of the band's greatest hits, featuring the version on "Don't Fear The Reaper" heard in Stephen King's TV mini-series, "The Stand", and a new take on "Godzilla," which will serve as the theme music for a TNT "Godzilla-thon" movie special. In addition, the group has re-cut "Burning For You," "Cities On Flame With Rock & Roll," "Flaming Telepaths," the aforementioned "This Ain't The Summer Of Love" and a brand-new studio recording of the classic live guitar jam, "Buck's Boogie," among others.

"It was fun to go back and re-record these songs with the arrangements that have evolved over time and in a lot more hi-fi manner than we could previously," says Bloom.

Awesome band! They have great stuff. Self titled album and Secret Treaties are two greats. Other favorite albums are Tyranny & Mutation, and Fire of Unknown Origin. They're still around and touring. I saw them live a few years back and they were pretty good.

BOC is in a way, kind of a joke band. Some of their lyrics are ridiculously poor, and it makes you wonder if they were doing it as a joke, or if they really felt like they were good lyrics. "She's as beautiful as a foot...Didn't believe it when he bit into her face
...It tasted just like a fallen arch"

They have a ton of great songs, it's just that very few people know anything beyond Don't Fear the Reaper and Godzilla. Pick up any of their early albums, all excellent stuff, just very few hits. If you're going to download a few to test, try "Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll", "The Red and the Black", "This Ain't the Summer of Love", "Black Blade" or "Seven Screaming Dizbusters"

Those are the albums I would recommend too.

Last Days of May is a really good song yet unlike just about anything else they did.

Live version from ETL album is fantastic.

From that same album, listen to Joan Crawford.

What I loved most about BOC was their love of just showing up at various clubs and jamming just to jam back in the 70s and 80s. But because BOC was under contract, they would bill themselves as "Soft White Underbelly." They love what they do, and do it very well.

Live BOC is, hands down, better than any studio stuff they do. Their improvisations make them classic rock gods.
