Tubby Smith putting together a racing team

Associated Press

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Kentucky basketball coach Tubby Smith will be a partner in a new NASCAR Busch Series team, he said Tuesday.

Smith and his wife, Donna, will join driver Jamie Mosley and NEMCO Motorsports - which is owned by former Busch Series champion and current Nextel Cup driver Joe Nemecheck - to field a team in 2005. Mosley, a native of Hazard, will drive the team's Chevrolet.

Mosley said that the team already has drawn interest from potential sponsors because of Smith's name recognition. Smith said he hopes the team will bring attention to the Tubby Smith Foundation, a charitable organization he founded in 1987.

"This is a unique opportunity to expand the scope of our efforts with the Tubby Smith Foundation, to further the education of many children in need and to bridge the knowledge gap that exists for many of our young people today," Smith said.

Mosley, 34, has driven in the ARCA ReMax Series and on the Busch Series circuit. He said the team hopes to run their car in about 20 races next year.

"We felt like that as a group, myself as a driver, coach Smith, and Joe Nemechek, that we created an alliance that would not only help each of us further our own personal goals, but collectively make a strong and successful package as a race team," Mosley said
