blue for students to the real blue?

to the moderators, this seemed like the best place to post considering the "hot deals" users will know the best. and it could be useful to others as well. 🙂

i got an amex blue for students card last summer sometime hoping to cash in on the BVG feature everyone talks so highly about. (rightfully so . . . ) unfortunately, i found out the student version didn't have this cool feature. but this was after i had already pricematched two purchases. (must've gotten lucky) after being denied on the third request for PM did i find out.

so i got to looking at what was required for the actual blue card and noticed a stipulation of a minimum annual income of 20,000. well guys, that's not me. i pay over that each year in tuition, so basically i'm broke. 🙂 BUT, i also saw a little blurb that said anyone with an existing amex card does not need to meet the minimum annual income. that got me to thinking, maybe i could qualify.

my question then is, what are the odds and what will the credit card companies be looking at? the only thing i think i have going for me is my current citibank card has a credit line of about 2,000 (which amex stated as being the minimum credit line for the blue card). i hope that tells amex that if another credit card company can trust me with a 2k credit limit, then they should as well. (considering i should have a good credit history) a drawback could be my current amex blue for students credit line is only 500 and i've had it for just under a year.

so, any thoughts on how i should proceed? i'm losing lots of money here by not having this BVG thingy. 🙁

try off topic forum, it's heavily read.

my 2c; I got accepted for blue (not student). i'm 19, put down my contract job as my job 24k~ whatever a year (technically 🙂). I got approved on the spot.

my friend did the same, cept he's had a job for years (until recently a student now, but he still put in an income) and he got declined for several reasons listed. i honestly am not sure what they check, i suppose my credit rating was better.

I have the student card, two years after that I tried applying for real blue, didn't put down a job - still got it. They said they'd split my credit line between student and real blue.. so give it a try. YMMV

I got approved for Blue (not student) and I'm a student... I just never said I was a student. I also put down $0 income too.

Maybe household income has something to do with it.. I included my parents' incomes even though I don't live with them now.

dealsearcher: that's great, but i've only had mine for less than a year. (but what did you put down for your income?)

brxndxn: hrmmm, that confuses the heck out of me. i don't see how you pulled it off with $0 income. 🙂 i wish i knew what the credit companies looked for in an application. and i'd like to do it with truthful information as well. hate to lie about income cause they can always check it with SSN.

and i'm hesitant to just apply because i've heard each time you apply for credit, it goes on your report and i don't want to seem like a credit seeker.

Did you guys get declined immediately? If not how long did it take? I applied online a few months ago. It said it couldnt determine my status and said I would get a letter in the mail in a few weeks, but I never heard from them!

Yeah I dunno about the regular blue's requirements but I got declined for it. I did get the student version though which is actually quite a good student card compared to the other ones out there. I bet if you called them and asked if it were possible to switch from a student blue to a regular blue they would be pretty good about it? They always seem pretty helpful on the phone. Also, my student blue has a credit line of 2000 - you can easily get it higher than that even (especially if you have had it for a year) by either calling them or filling out their online request for a higher credit limit.

man, I got denied once... I need to try again. That price protection thing is kinda nice especially with buying computer parts

Omyek - I don't know why your limit is so low. I got mine with a starting limit of $2000 just a couple months ago. How much have you charged on the card? Yes, I have seen the blurb about "graduating" your card to the real thing, but I'm going to wait till I put at least $1,000-2000 through the card. People who have graduated your cards, how long did you hold them till you upgraded, what was your limit (before and after), how easy is it to do.
And you are correct Omyek, you should not frequently apply for new cards, or try to raise your limits on the cards you do have. Those actions supposedly show up on your report, so the less inquiries you have, the better.

As for me .........no one ever checked anything I have written.....
I rem' once I put in 75000 as annual income cos' I was getting an offer from them every week !
I thought they would check and find out what an ass*hole I was being !!!

They sent me a card instead !

So now I have amex, plat. (s) , titaniums etc.

BTW : If you have a good credit history and have been using the card regularly : then u can just call in and ask to be issued a blue card and that this one be cancelled.
In my case I had it for a year and then the blue came out and THEY called me to ask if I wantedd to switch !!!
That was b'for BVG .....I am glad I agreed !!!

yeah : let me frame this in this way.......

I am a grad student here ( since 2.6 yrs)

Generally when I apply I include my teaching asst.-ship and tution scholarship both !!
Although , I never get to even see my scholarship : it is directly paid by the dept. to the Univ.

So, actual money I get is jus' the T.A. : but my income is : T.A. + Scholarship + whatever amount I think is reasonable to put in as gifts etc./other sources of income.

it seems like it's a hit or miss type of deal.

and as i said earlier, i'd rather not lie about my income cause they can verify it with my SSN.

maybe i'll just call up a CSR and explain my situation and ask what the odds are. i'll try to get that done today and get back to you guys.

I've got a blue for students (I havent been a student in 2 years, but anyway) when I tried to get the regular Blue card, I was denied. I have a decent paying job, but my card's been nearly maxed out for a while. I haven't called and bitched yet, but I plan on doing that this week.

well i just got off the phone with one of the CSR and got denied. 🙂

before i decided to apply i asked her what they looked for in the application to find out if i had a fighting chance, but she couldn't tell me much. basically just income, credit history, etc. the usual. so i decided to apply anyway and take my chances. with their "express approval" i found out a few minutes later that i got denied.

i'll be getting a letter in the mail within the next week or so saying why. i'll be more enlightened then.
