The comment was not directed at you. It's just that with every one of these threads "they" crawl out of the woodwork to proclaim Blu-ray is dead and digital downloads are the way to go.

Do most people see the advantage? Probably not.

I've got a nice 1080p tv and a decent stereo, so I can see a benefit in quality.

Most people though really don't have the kind of hardware where they see any real significant increase in quality (or at least not the quality you might expect from a $200+ investment plus more expensive movies/rentals). When you are sitting 6+ feet from a 26-32" tv, using just the built-in speakers, you certainly don't notice a huge difference over DVD.

That's my point - I really don't see this catching on, to the point of supporting a totally new format...Especially during an economic downturn...Will blu-ray matter in a few years? Will it stay around long enough to live along side downloadable hd-video on demand?

Yeah, I could bearly tell the difference between my Samsung upconvert DVD player and Blueray pic quality.

The Blueray menus were a lot fancier, but I could care less about that. The wow factor that we had from VHS to DVD is not there. Also, I'm pretty sure you need a 1080P TV to take advantage of the better picture.

FYI, Blu-ray strong start for 2009
"Disc sales have tripled in the past year, according to The Digital Entertainment Group, an organization made up of movie studios and electronics manufacturers that track the industry. Blu-ray sold 28.6 million discs in the fourth quarter of 2008, and there are 10.7 million Blu-ray players currently in the United States.

The biggest seller was "The Dark Knight," the No. 2 highest grossing motion picture of all time. "The Dark Knight"is the first Blu-ray disc to sell more than one million copies.

These strong sales were also reported by the British Video Association in a post-Christmas report."

My wife only pretended to get it, to be a good sport. She's actually awesome, but her obvious acting was proof that it wasn't the wow we expected...

But I'm getting some netflixes tomorrow (ironman and jesse james), let's see them wow us!

Picture Quality isn't THAT big of an improvement from the movies I've watched on both HD-DVD/Blu-Ray, but sound quality sure is a lot better. If you have a decent Home Theater setup you'll notice a difference.

But it is catching on and people are adopting at larger rates every week. If you have some time there is an interesting discussion here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb....php?t=798272&page=179 with a lot of facts, figures, and voices of dissent as well, so you get to hear all sides.

Some people say they can't really see a difference between upconverted DVDs and Blu-rays, and with certain transfer and smaller screens I can see that being true, but watching a well-transferred movie on a screen over 42", I find it very hard to believe you cannot tell the difference and that is before we even get into audio.

Disney has been and probably always will be the worst offender with respect to ads. Thank goodness we have the forward button.

KT

i have a couple disnety flicks where that you cant FF through those stupid ads. you press the FF button or menu button and you get the middle finger flashing on the screen.

Worst hi-def movie I've ever seen was Clerks 2 on HD-DVD... such a horrible, horrible transfer. The character's faces were all blotchy and such... yuck.

I use a PS3 for Blu-Ray and I don't notice any excessive load times.

On the bright side, I've been picking up all sorts of releases for less than they'd cost on standard DVD :p
It's taken longer than I expected for the prices to get this low, though.

I mean.. if the movie sucks in dvd.. its gonna suck in blu ray. If its great, then who cares if it its from a VCR. 10 minutes into a movie I don't even realize the quality. Everyone I've talked to about this seems to feel the same way.

We can apply the same argument to games, if it's great who cares if you're playing it at 640x480 instead of 1900x1200 :p

I just came in here to say it is spelled "blu-ray" for the inevitable countless people that will spell it "blueray"

That is all.

I say Blu-Ray is here to stay, for a few years at least. As the technology matures and the price of entry decreases, Blu-Ray will slowly phase in and DVD will phase out.

I'm sure that downloadable content will eventually become much more common, but I think people really like to own movies. As the on-demand services mature, I'm interested to see where the market will shift.

1080i works just as well for movies as 1080P.

To be exact, it is "Blu-ray Disc".

Yes.

It sucks, but works well if you want to go get some food/drinks before it starts :p

Not always the case. I have a fairly inexpensive Magnavox unit, and it doesn't take 2 minutes to boot up. More like 45 seconds.

My PS3 doesn't have any of these problems. And with my 50" SXRD and kickass HT sound system, Blu Ray is WORLDS better than anything else I play. HDTV, upscaled DVDs, pretty much everything else looks ugly in comparison.

I have heard that the delay was annoyingly long. Been one of the reasons that I have held off. I guess I will continue to hold off.

You gotta have the right TV to see the HUGE difference in Blu-Ray over DVDs.

And I mean HUGE difference!

And a 720p low end LCD ain't gonna do it. That's why the Blu-Ray displays at stores have large, 1080P displays.

On my 52" LCD and 67" DLP, the difference is like night and day between Blu-Ray and DVD.

OP,. what you have done is akin to buying a ferrai, driving it on a dirt road, and then complaining about the bumpy ride and traction.

The only issues I have had was with Iron Man and Dark Knight. Iron man required an update to my PS3. Dark Knight took awhile to load to menu.

That's my point - I'm sure it'll look great on my old 57" RPTV, and I'm bringing it over to my dad's place to see Ironman on his 60" dlp - but how many people have larger than 40" tvs these days?

I just think it's a niche product right now, and will survive based on marketing not demand
