Now I wanna buy a 52" TV like your typical American even though I don't have any money in my bank account to pay for the CC bill.

I have a 1080i and I think blu-ray is amazing, so there :p

Indeed, 1080p is pretty much useless for films since they aren't shot at 60FPS :p

I'm anxiously awaiting a Hot Deal that will get me a 67"+ for $1,300. I might hold out for 72", I'm not sure... then I can unload my bulky 65" RPTV and reclaim a few square feet of living room :p

Oops, meant to edit

It would be very typical American to buy it even though you don't have money to pay the CC bill

I  Sammys.

I have the 56" A650 and I really like it. Its an improvement over the 57" Mitsu DLP I had before.

UPDATE

God, I hate spreading misinformation. For the sake of karma, I'm updating this thread because I just upgraded to a 1080p 50" plasma and, let me tell you, blu-ray's friggin fantastic on it. It's partly because the size makes SD look rather awful on the set and partly because of the resolution difference between my old set and new.

Sorry for being wrong, I do really like blu-ray now.

well, I doubt that has anything to do with the issue.

In your OP, you stated that T2 looked slightly better. well...that's a notoriously sub-par BD transfer, so it will look only slightly better on any set.

as with the history of DVD (esp. early on), some transfers will be garbage and some will be spectacular. Are you now comparing T2 on your new set? I bet it's still shitty compared to some of the tier 0 BDs. What really sucks for you, though, is they are re-issuing T2 on BD this May with a new transfer. :( (T1 is also getting a re-issue, but it's the same transfer, so no reason to double dip.)

Go on, fellow patriot! ;)

Samsung is leaving the DLP business, so if you want one of their latest LED DLPs, you better get them while you can. After the Samsung DLPs are gone, Mitsubishi will be the only ones making them...no LED though.

Movie 1: 9 seconds

Movie 2: 12 seconds

Pretty insignificant to me.

I don't think the boot time on my PS3 is the problem. It is the damn previews on BR discs. I watched a BR movie the other day that had 12 previews on it before you got to the main movie screen. Yes you can skip them but it is still annoying to have to do it.

That was one thing I loved about HD-DVD. Most movies immediately started the movie when you popped in the disc. Now HD-DVD boot times are a different story :)

It seems it could be studio-dependent as some discs go right to the movie while others play a dozen movies/warnings/ads. The latter discs can be quite annoying, particularly when you are unable to advance through the warnings.

KT

just watched one the other night that had one of those invasive anti-smoking "truth.org" BS ads AFTER THE FUCKING MENU!!!111!!!

WTF is that?? :|:|:|:|:|:|

(I think it was Doubt, btw. Decent flick. not mind-blowing, or anything; but well-crafted indeed.)

Seriously, these ads are annoying. I can't find a way to turn them off and it starts getting old. :|

T2 is a pretty crappy transfer. I own it and it's definitely better than the upscaled DVD (wtaching in 1080P), but it still lacks. Watching something like Kill Bill would be much better. If you are unaware, I actually find this list: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=858316 to be pretty damn good. All of the Tier 0 movies I have seen from that list have looked stunning. Be warned though, many of the guys that participate in that thread see things I can't see on my 46" screen.

It is unfortunate when people are introduced to the format with a subpar title like this and hopefully the studios will be more careful with their releases in the future. That does seem to be the case so far, going by a lot of the newer releases, though there are still a few that come out looking sub-standard.

As for the loading time, I've never encountered that problem with my PS3. My movies are usually up and running within around 30 seconds maximum.

KT

Came here to post this. T2 is a really bad example to pick if you were trying to experience what Blu-ray can do.

Really? That's sad, 'cause I'm quite a fan of their DLPs. Unless you need to hang your TV on a wall or have some crazy viewing angle, I don't know why you wouldn't go with a DLP. Especially with the new LED technology so there's no more worry about a lamp dying. I've never heard anyone complain about my TV in any sort of manner either.

Ya, it kind of sucks. My brother was in the market for a HDTV and the Samsung HL67A750 looks like it would fit the bill perfectly. Well since they're getting so hard to find now, he may just keep what he has (50" Samsung DLP).
