BD PC drives are all set to go. Should start ~$250. Wonder what a blank 30GB disk will cost? Hehe.

Wow...$250 is really not bad at all, I remember when DVD burners used to cost $600 and up. I'll be all over that. 🙂

Now, that's what I'm talking about.

🙂 I have a legitimate reason for not liking them.

1. Dead $300 DVD changer 2 months out of warranty
2. Dead PS2
3. Vaio laptop that will boot... only if you put pressure on the bottom of it with your knee

oh well I stopped being an early adopter years ago 😛
Oh the tragedy, you spent the BIG $50 on a DVD burner.

And I'm glad they chose a format, NOW FREAKIN' RELEASE A DRIVE AND MEDIA ALREADY! This DL capacity sucks ass! I need more space per disc! :|

ahem more like $52 after taxes and shipping for my black NEC ND-3520A

Oh sorry, the BIG $52. 😉

SWEET! Man, I hope they don't start out at some bullsh!t speed, like 2X. :| I REALLY don't want to wait 24hrs to burn one disc. If they come out at a decent recording speed, and the price is $250, I'm buying one when they hit the shelves. 🙂

I hate Sony. They make junk.

yes, bringing the compact disc to the market in the 80's was definetely a low point in media storage. they were junk compared to the 8" floppy disks and cassette tapes everyone was using at the time.

i might also point out that CD's would have been a mere 60 minutes if Sony hadn't pushed for the 74 minute standard so that symphonys would fit. they also brought us the walkman, the discman, the 3.5" floppy disk, Betamax (a television standard until only recently), DAT (a continuing recording industry standard), CD-R (along with philips and TY), Steadyshot, Digital8, Playstation, and some of the most respected audio recording consoles in the world (try $1 million a pop). they also bring a lot of the movies and music you probably enjoy to the market, as they own Sony Pictures, Columbia TriStar, Arista, BMG, Columbia Records, Epic, J, Jive, LaFace, RCA, Verity, etc.

that said, sony has made some blunders in the past (minidisc, memory stick). and their stuff costs too much, and it's not any more reliable than anyone else's stuff. so they certainly aren't god.

I imagine they'll start at 1X, but it will be a different data rate.

Thank goodness for this.

I dislike Sony, but Blu-Ray was certainly better than HD-DVD, so i'm glad to see this.

No backward compatability.

I'm sure they'll offer DVD support.

Ok, I just some reading around the net and found that Pioneer made a prototype Blu-Ray disc drive that uses both red and blue lasers. That sounds like a good solution.
Also found that JVC has created a triple layer disc that has HD Blu-Ray content on one side and regular dual-layer DVD on the other. If movies are released on that type of disc you'll be able to enjoy the movie before you get around to upgrading to Blu-Ray.

Each Blu-Ray layer holds 25GB so a dual layer disc would be 50GB.

GOOD. I dreaded the seemingly unavoidable media war, but I'm glad to see it's been settled. Now let's see how long Blu-Ray lasts before these damned holographic discs with 1TB storage come knockin'.

My comment was not in reference to the formats they've created, I was responding directly to Baked's comment about Sony haters. I am a Sony "hater," and I was merely expressing that people have very valid reasons for not liking Sony. Sony has a reputation for quality and their products are more expensive than the competition, and yet it is low quality crap. I've owned many electronic devices, and the only ones that have ever died on their own have been Sonys and one Zenith TV that was very old. What bugs me most about Sony is that they have products KNOWN issues and they just keep making them (there's a least a half dozen DVD players affected by the C 13:00 error). And why bother if it won't break until the warranty period is over?

Edit: I don't care if their format is the one that "won," just don't expect me to buy any of their hardware ever again. 🙂

Being a Sony technology and already in a cartridge format (MD, PSP), it'll be proprietary, and will NOT be backward compatible, which is a good thing 'cause I don't have to worry about my movie discs getting scratched up. Maybe they'll sell empty cartridge adapters for DVDs down the road.
1) Blu-ray is NOT a proprietary Sony format. The spec was a collaboration of several companies providing input and technology. The two big players were Sony and Matsushita (Panasonic), but the royalties and licensing fees will be shared across dozens of patent holders. How this different than the patent pool for DVD, CD, or HD DVD? Same concept, just different companies.

2) Blu-ray WILL be backwards compatible with DVD. In other words, a DVD will play in a BD-ROM player.

3) Blu-ray dics will NOT play in an old DVD player. Similarly, HD DVD discs will NOT play in an old DVD player. Both formats have a spec for dual-format discs (i.e. DVD and Blu-ray stamped onto a single disc), but manufacturing costs might make their use very limited.

4) Blu-ray discs will NOT require protective caddies (like a floppy disc). A protective coating will likely be used that will prevent scratches and skipping due to fingerprints. If the coating becomes widespread, Blu-ray discs will be more durable than current DVD's.

The logical spec for both formats was pretty much identical anyway. I wanted the spec with higher capacity to win. Though the article doesn't say exactly, I hope the Blu-ray physical spec gets the nod. I, for one, welcome our new Blu-ray overlords.

Toshiba doesn't seem to think it's been decided yet.

http://gear.ign.com/articles/611/611515p1.html?fromint=1

Most likely the news yesterday was correct, but neither side is actually saying it themselves.
Toshiba will be unveiling higher capacity HD DVD-ROM discs this week. It remains to be seen whether they are higher density per layer, or they've found a way to incorporate more layers. When the unification discussion started, there were comments about Toshiba looking to incorporate Blu-ray's multi-layer technology. Maybe this is the result of those discussions?

4 layers per disc? Talk about an inelegant solution. And HD DVD's primary selling point was it's ease of manufacturing. Hopefully this isn't the case.
