The unscratchable discs are a HUGE plus for blu-ray. Video rental chains will like it, since they won't have to worry about defective credits for those movies.

See I dont think people will want to buy into a player that cant play all the movies. Its just too expensive and if you cant watch all the latest releases with it then its just not worth the money. Thats why I think the whole format war is gona be slow going and wont catch on untill someone has already clear dominance.

You do realize why Blu-ray has that scratch resistant coating:

"But this proximity of the information layer also means that the BD disc is more vulnerable to accidental scratches...

If TDK?s hard coat can live up to it?s marketing claims, discs provided with the 0.1 mm coating will be even more resistant against damage then current DVDs. The coating is highly scratch resistant and fingerprints can be wiped off to a point where the disc can be read perfectly. This feature will help Blu-ray take an advantage. The negative point is that the coating makes the BD more expensive.

With the integral 0.6 mm protective layer, special coating on the HD-DVD disc is unnecessary. This seems more than logical, because we all know how to handle DVDs."

I'm rooting for HD-DVD. Mostly for my dislike of Sony and their urge to come out with all these proprietary formats.

Beta
MiniDisc
PSP Movie Disc
Memory Stick
and now Blu Ray.

I want to see them go 5 for 5 in failures.

aside from storage capacity, what is the benefit of bluray over hddvd?

You get to show off your fatwallet?

So then why would any movie company back the Blu Ray over HDDVD? The only benefit is they have more storage space on the discs, but it is still costing them more for that storage space.

Because Sony is a movie study as well and is an advocate of the most strigent DRMs available? I wouldnt be surprised if BluRay on PC puts malware on your computer.

If some idiot wants to scratch it, they WILL scratch it.

MD wasn't that bad, but UMD was bad. MemoryStick isn't that bad either, but there are too many variants of it, but all other camera manufacturers tried to force their own proprietary flash memory.

HD-DVD will win this war simply by name if they both put out the same or near the same level of quality. People are familiar with the terms HD and DVD, blu ray is like wtf a sea monster?

lol, I don't really care who "wins". I'm sure they'll eventually make dual format players and I need to buy a 1080p TV before the next generation DVD player.

Ricoh develops new device that can both read and write HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.
One of the differences between the HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc formats is the discs' structure. Although both formats use the same laser wavelength (405nm), Sony?s format modifies the structure of the disc to achieve a higher value of numerical aperture, which allows Blu-ray Disc to store up to 25GB on the same area a HD DVD disc can store 15GB.

As a result, Blu-ray Disc is incompatible with HD DVD and DVD media because instead of having a 12mm thick disc made of a 0.6 mm disc with 0.6 mm protective coating on top (as in DVD media), Blu-ray Disc is made of a 1.1 mm disc covered by a 0.1mm protective layer.

Because of the different thicknesses of the protective layers, the data layers of both formats are at different depths from the surface and thus the components required to read or write them are different?until now.

The Nikkei Net Interactive reported over the weekend that Ricoh Technologies has developed an optical device that can read and write both next-generation optical disk formats.

The device in question is a diffraction plate that is placed between the laser and the lens, which allows changing the laser beam?s spot size on the fly. This will make possible to use the same components to read both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD media. Hardware manufacturers would only need to make the diffraction plate change to the proper state depending on the media loaded in the disc drive.

"This diffraction device is the first one that is ready for four formats [CD, DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc], including BD and HD-DVD," a Ricoh spokesman told EETimes. "It will make it possible to build players and recorders ready for all formats, which will benefit consumers"

Ricoh will show the optical device later this week at the International Optoelectronics Exhibition '06 in Japan. We?ll have more on this new technology as it develops.

I'd suggest that time also has a good bit to do with it. Blu-ray is barely out. Heck, I didn't even know it was released yet.

Looking at amazon.com sales is pointless when you're giving one product 2x longer to sell than the other 😛h

I would think that comparing HD-DVD versus Blu-Ray movie sales would be a better indicator of how one camp is doing against the other. Currently there are not enough players of either on the market for either to make much of a push. LG and possibly other manufacturers plan to have dual format players. When those hit the market I expect a greater acceptance of both formats. Having a large collection of DVDs already I am in no hurry to buy into either. If the players get down to a reasonable price having one for the occaisonal rental plus being able to upscale regualr DVDs would be nice. I might even occaisionally buy a HD or Blu-Ray title, but am certainly not looking to replace even part of my collection with them.
