Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD Already Pissing Me Off!

I'm going to wait and hope for a purple pill. Paying for different players is just not going to happen. I'll wait for a multi-format player.

I haven't kept up, but I'm planning to buy a new HDTV, DVD player, HT system, etc....so can someone please explain the difference? And we're talking mid-2006, right?

Thanks in advance...

There isn't much difference. Just two different groups of companies that can't agree with each other, just like DVD-R vs DVD+R.

I suppose Blu-Ray holds more information though, so it gets my preliminary vote.

On the other hand, out of the two gaming consoles that will use this technology, I would rather have the XBOX360 as opposed to the PS3 (yes, MS just announced an external HD-DVD drive coming out soon)

On the other hand, maybe I will just build an HTPC system and not get an Xbox, which brings me back to not knowing what format I want again.

Same here. But I will wait for a player that supports both.

I hope to beable to buy a DVD-player, HDTV, amp, and speakers sometime in late 2006/early 2007.

rather not support sony and their drm happy rootkit ways.
adoption deepends on price of hardware/media. first to 40 dollar walmart player wins.

Seeing as neither format is compatible with my HDTV... it doesn't really matter.

New Releases in HD format won't be for months and months anyway.

Thanks Hollywood, for nerfing our HDTV goodness... spend more time learning to make watchable movies!!!

Chinese players with HD output on the component outs FTW!!!

Explain. Why can't I use component.

Wait until there is a single standard, and preferably with the DRM cracked...

Why do you need the DRM cracked?

Perhaps to avoid buying a new PC moniter?

I don't watch DVD's on my PC personally & my HDTV has HDMI so I'll be able to use DRM enabled players myself, but thats the most logical reason I can think of... as for the poll I'll be waiting for one tech or the other to become standard before I buy unless the PC drives are a lot cheaper then I suspect they'll be at introduction.

i'd like to be able to play my movies where i want, whenever i want, and HD DVD offers a better chance of that.

not to mention that afaik sony still hasn't been able to demonstrate the max capacity of BR reliably. seems kinda like their lying about PS2's graphics capabilities.

It's looking increasingly likely that HD media players will be required to support quite aggressive DRM. Should this happen, this means that the HD output will only be available in an encrypted digital form.

Analogue(component) or unencrypted digital outputs will likely be forced to be degraded to standard resoultion, for media which requests it.

While 'unprotected' discs will almost certainly allow HDTV output via component - it's highly likely that 'protected' discs will only give HD output via HDCP digital.

In the same way as we've seen with DVD, some less reputable manufacturers have provided very simple codes to disable region coding - we may see the same manufacturers allowing simply bypass of this protection.

FTW!!!
Although I might just get the addon for the 360 if it's <$100.
I think I'll vote Other/Undecided

Im gonna buy a playstation 3. If anything, just in case my playstation 2 breaks, I will still be able to play all my games from the playstation 1 and 2. Blu ray will be gravy.

The DRM/HDCP thing is really kind of turning me off to both formats (no way am I going to trash my monitor just to watch these discs), but even assuming that can be worked around, I'm not going to be buying anything until I can get a standalone player or (ideally) a PC drive for under $350 or so. And that'll probably take quite a while.

I have no HDTV and no pressing desire to own an HDTV. Up until this point, I've been very satisfied with watching my movies on a 19" TV with a tube shaped somewhat like a space helmet. I will be quite content with waiting and watching until one becomes a standard. I will continue to buy regular DVDs - except *possibly* epics, war movies, or other movies where visuals are a large part of the quality of the movie. Those I may wait and buy when I upgrade to whatever the new standard is, rather than wanting to replace them then.

I don't think I'll buy a player until they're under $100 and discs are under $20.

im not going to get either for a while.... i will get some form of hddvd/blueray though. But I will probably wait till the second generation.

My AE700 projector is already ready (which is a good thing for me) but between the new cablecard HDtivo and a new receiver (that supports hdmi switching) i want a hd-dvd/blueray player will be 3rd on my list of wants.
