Blu-Ray, TV question

My current LCD TV has Input video formats of 480p, 720p, 1080i, 480i, will I notice an improvement of picture quality if I get a Blu-ray disk player?

Thanks

Yes, assuming you play Blu-ray discs in them. Well, it also depends on screen size and distance you sit from the screen. (For example if you are sitting 15 feet away from a 22" LCD you probably won't notice any difference)

If you didn't notice a difference why would they be sold?

I think you would be hard pressed to notice the Blu Ray improvement at that distance away from a 37" TV. The Blu Ray player may upconvert your existing DVDs better than your present DVD player, so there may be some additional benefits there.

I grew up in the era of the 19" black and white TV's so it's like I'm front row at the IMAX. 🙂

I guess I was special...mine 19" was color 😉

You will see a difference with a 37" TV and 8 feet away. I can see a difference on my 42" TV from 10 feet away. Go for it, you'll wonder how you watched SD all of these years.

You must have been one of those "rich" kids. 😉 My dad used to tell us if wanted color, go outside.

Any suggestions on which player to buy? Dont want to spend over 250.

You have a small set and no legacy expensive AVR, so the main advantages (good DVD upscaling and 7.1 analog output) don't help, while the main disadvantage -- it's S-L-O-W -- will be there for every single Blu-Ray you play. The JVC upscales about as well anyway, is much faster, and is cheaper. I'd get that or the Panasonic at Costco.

Slow? Mine is ready most of the time before the projector is warmed up and that only takes about 30 seconds (and it is over 2 years old). Remember the first few years of DVD Players...not the quickest either.

After all a Blu-ray machine is a computer...highly specialized, but still a computer.

The 51FD is one of the slowest units around. On the flip side, it's also very good with DVD's, slightly better than the JVC.

we used to use 14" computer monitors as well😉

13" viewable!!

Okay, now I feel really old...the first computer I used had a TV as it's monitor.

I didn't have color TV in our home as a kid until I was a teenager. I used a 13 inch color TV for years and finally got a 27 inch about 7 years ago. I finally got a LCD 46-inch last year and its great for movies!

As already stated, at 8 feet from a 37" you won't be getting anywhere close to the full benefit from BD (you'd either need to be 5 feet from your 37" or be 8 feet from a 60" for that). There will be a difference, but the question is whether the difference will be enough to warrant the cost of the player plus the higher cost of BD over DVD. My gut reaction is to say no.

Do you happen to have any friends with BD players? If you could borrow one and watch a good BD on it, then that's about the only way to know for sure if the difference is worth it to you.

That's a good idea, kalrith. I can always move closer to the TV. 8 feet is a comfortable distance for me. And I can always get a bigger TV. 🙂
