Blu-ray movie doesn't look very good

You're thinking about the Image Constraint Token (ICT). It, to the best of my knowledge, has never been enabled on any BR-D, and I've heard zero plans to do so so far. AACS allows you to output to 1080i over analog without ICT.

Only with HDMI (or HDCP DVI -> HDMI) can you achieve 720p/1080i/1080p.

Totally untrue. I was watching BR-Ds at 1080i using component until I got a more modern HDTV.

You need to do the same thing I do i.e. go to AVS forums, find the thread that covers your model, get the service guide and tweak using the settings the AVS members suggest as a guideline.

For blu-ray movies over HDMI from the PS3, I like the "going to the movie" effect the TV provides, but lately I've noticed ringing/halo effect in some very dark scenes=time to be calibrated.

BTW, since your model doesn't have HDMI, does it have DVI? Because you could just buy a DVI-TO-HDMI cable and hook it up that way, and it will only lack the audio capability. That is what my friend with an older RCA RP CRT does.

I tried messing around w/ the PS3 video settings but still no improvement. The TV is a HITACHI 51F500. I found the manual for it and under features it says: Full 1080i HDTV capable when used with a Set-Top Box Does that mean I won't see 1080i with a PS3 only my cable box? The tv does have DVI input, I guess I could try to get a HDMI - DVI cable and try it that way.

theres your next logical step. compare analog to digital. I'd just get an adapter & hdmi cable instead of a specialty cable if it was me.

I think that means it doesn't have an ATSC tuner built-in, but I could be wrong.

Nonsense. The Hitachi rear projection HDTVs were some of the best displays when they were out. There is no reason the picture shouldn't be jaw dropping unless it's a bad blu-ray transfer or a setting. It could accept and display 480i/p, 540p, 720p, 1080i with it's native resolution being 1920x1080i. HD ready just means it doesn't have a tuner.

I"m gonna take the blu-ray disc to a friend's place over the weekend and see what it looks like there. He has a samsung HDTV 1080p i think and he has a PS3 connected via HDMI. I doubt it's the discs, pretty sure it's either the cable or the tv. Although searching on the web I found a few posts from people who have the same TV that I do and are able to view Blu-ray via component cable. Maybe I just have crappy cables.

I have a 65" Hitachi 65F59 and I think it looks great.

:thumbsup: They just have to be calibrated once in awhile.

No worries m8. BTW, once you have it hooked up with DVI-to-HDMI try Speed Racer on Blu-Ray, if the colors and PQ don't impress you, the set definitely needs some TLC.
