Blu-ray losing market share

The numbers show that Blu-ray's market share dropped 13.39 percent from the previous week, and that DVD's numbers actually went up by 0.15 percent.
-ars technica

If the trend continues looks like upscaling DVD players and HD downloads will be the eventual winners.

They think it's partly due to the economy, but they should also consider most Blu-ray players are PS3's. With more good PS3 games on the way more people are going to be buying games for the PS3's and not Blu-ray discs. How many stand alone players vs. PS3 are there?

It doesn't take a mathematician to note that eight percent is quite a bit lower than the 50 percent market share Sony wanted by the end of the year,
Wow! Sony must be on some bad crack if they thought they were going to get 50% market share. Do 50% of homes even have an HD TV yet?

It won't go anywhere. When the holiday season hits, prices for HDTV, BR players and movies will drop.

The week that Iron Man comes out expect a 100% market share increase. Plus $200 players this holiday season.

Exactly! Just take a look at the movies that came out during that week.

And I think the previous spike was due to the release of Transformers.
I just picked that movie up myself, and finally got Batman Begins. For BD purchases, those were it for the past few months. Then again, I've been out of money not having a job while back at home from school.
Will definitely be picking up Iron Man at some point soon.

And this comment adds what value to the conversation?

Iron Man was one of the top grossing box office movies ever and will likely be the new reference material for showing off your A/V system. It should soundly trounce any just about previous Blu-Ray release.

I dunno, Transformers is going to be kickass for demo material.
Regardless, Iron Man was just an excellent movie. I need to buy it so I can watch it a couple more times. I just recently picked up Transformers, after the long wait for it to be on Blu-ray. Haven't seen it since the theater run, although I had seen it about 5 times while in theaters (once drive-in, 5 in theaters... only paid for the drive-in and 5th theater visit when it came to imax, previous theater visits were free because I worked there, got buddies and family in too). Am dying to finally watch it in the comfort of my own place with DD TrueHD. :)

Ill pick up Iron Man in BRD. I would love it if Saving Private Ryan would make it out soon. I know Band of Brothers is out but I already got the entire collection off HD-HBO. Which is close enough to HD-DVD and Blu-Ray for me.

But a whole bunch of great looking games are coming out this holiday season. I think most PS3 owners will buy games over movies. Can only wait and see.

I haven't had a chance to pick up Transformers in an HD format yet. I rented it on DVD when it came out and I was very underwhelmed with the soundtrack. It just didn't have the energy that I thought it would. As far as Transformers sales go, they stumbled out of the gate. They had a decent push with HD-DVD but then that fell apart. They'll make up some ground with Blu-Ray, but I just don't see it having the same sales as Ironman when it's released at the same time as the DVD version. And then will come Dark Knight but I just don't see it having the same sales as Ironman.

I thought the exact same thing after buying the HD-DVD. The audio was completely underwhelming, it just had no "Ummph" to it. I know its not my setup because other DVD/HDs sound fine.

The only way you could possibly be interested in this is if you are *still* bitter and trying to prove you were "right" in supporting HD DVD. Isn't it time to move on?

Fail. I never bought into HD-DVD. I think the majority will stick to DVD until video downloads become as popular as iTunes is for music.

I'm interested because this is a tech site, and I'm interested in future technology.

Are you a Blu-ray fanboy who's upset that Blu-ray hasn't done as well as Sony expected?

Epic FAIL cubby1223!

Go out and buy some more games for your PS3 Sony shill fan boy, since that's what you are really interested in, and stop spreading your pointless BR BS towards anyone who still has HD-DVD or you think might be secretly hiding HD-DVD from the Sony police in their closet. And by the way, my bedroom HT system does have the HD-DVD player in the closet, along with rest of the HT components, if you MUST know and want to report me to Sony's BR police. :p

You, I mean Sony, won already, all right? Congratulations and stuff. Now go away and stop gloating about it. Was this the only time in your short, miserable life you ever felt like you won anything? And what a hollow victory it was, since it wasn't even your victory to begin with. So take your expensive Blu-ray plated Sony war medals and STFU about it and stop trolling like a bitter winner about the dead HD-DVDs and the bitter users that can't get over it every chance you get. I am bitter about Sony, period, and I have been for at least 20 years, for many reasons your small troll fan boy mind can't even begin grasp.

I'm over the format war, and I still like the HD-DVD format and I will likely get a cheap BR player soon, and it will NOT be a Sony brand player. And I may even refuse to buy a single Sony Studios BR release, too. Just to protest all the shenanigans Sony pulled out of their ass to kill off HD-DVD, which is only one amongst MANY other reasons I personally dislike Sony.

But my HD-DVD players and HD-DVD collection isn't going anywhere, bitter Sony fan boy. So you can just stop rubbing your ancient Blu format victory in everyone who you falsely presume uses HD-DVDs face like the mindless zombie Sony sock puppet that you obviously are.

Take your own advice, and move on yourself, your PS3 is getting lonely without you. :brokenheart:

Yeah there was so many times during the movie that I thought a big explosion effect would come on but it never did.

Its almost like they forgot to put in any good LFE.

Then leaning HD DVD waiting for things to shake out. You have something lingering inside of you that doesn't like Blu-ray. I just call it as I see is. :p Brake down your argument, you're using an extremely small data set to prove a much larger point, claiming to be all about technology yet _only_ interested in what might be around the corner, continuing with the unoriginal knock against the PS3 as a movie player - and finishing it up by saying Sony is on some "bad crack".

Yep, I stand by my original assessment. :D

I heard there was a recall on Ironman, because some players had problems with it. If yours has the UPC/EAN: 097361385747, that could be why. It least I hope that's why, as I'm really looking forward to IM.:p
