hmm. might think about buying them. how big are the uvs?

Ultraviolet is an online steaming/DL service. They have various affiliate sites that link to your library there like VUDU and FLIXSTER. If you buy a DVD copy of a movie with UV, then it unlocks an SD copy of that movie in the library. A Blu movie with UV unlocks an HD copy. You can also allow guest pass access to a select few to your online library, too, which is pretty cool. VUDU offers you 5 free movies just for signing up, but the selection is limited.

I hope that helps.

To DL and play it, you have to load their respective apps. That's how they control the digital copy. I don't believe the DRM is going to be a problem since the digital copy you DL is app dependent to run it.

To stream it, from just a browser or something like Google chromecast, you just need to play it back from their websites. Even my Blu-ray players have Vudu and Flixster apps for playback.

I think UV basically works with a few certain providers. I haven't tried it, my when I signed up for a Vudu account, I signed up for and linked a UV account with Vudu. I also was hoping for some decent free flicks (fail) and did the same with Target's video service.

I think if you register movies with UV, and have it linked on Vudu, you can download or stream any video. Well - I have a feeling that Vudu might not have every UV title, but I don't know.

Oh that's awesome. A hard drive filled with a bunch of shit quality movies. Fantastic. How can I get more of that?

To be fair, iTunes movies aren't complete shit. I would take their HD selections over a DVD most of the time. In some cases iTunes has the best copy of a movie ever to be released, and might ever be released for stuff that isn't popular enough to make Blu Ray (like Disney's DuckTales: Treasure of the Lost Lamp). It just sucks compared to most Blu Rays, but those are a very high water mark.

That does show a disturbing trend though that maybe the distribution system that replaces Blu Ray will be worse quality than Blu Ray, at least initially.

I dunno. Look at the iTunes trailers for The Prince of Egypt and Little Shop of Horrors. Looks terribad.

Little Shop has a Blu Ray release that is going to beat any online distribution option for quality.

But for The Prince of Egypt, the Amazon HD copy (I don't know if iTunes's version is HD) is simply the best version of it available anywhere as far as picture quality is concerned.

In fact if you mix the video of the Amazon copy with the full DTS track from its best DVD release you get as close to a Blu Ray copy of the film anyone will see for a while.

just snagged gravity 3d bluray from amazon for $28. there simply is no other way i could get the quality of a 3d bluray with streaming at the current time (unless i'm pirating). it's still significantly cheaper than it would have been for us to pay to see it in the theater.

$30 is about two IMAX tickets, so you're good.

The pisser is that Amazon usually reduces the price of Blurays to $15 a few months from release.

not around here it's not $15, it's closer to $20 each.

and amazon rarely drops 3d blurays below $20. many are still in the $25 - $30 range and they are old.

Yep, mine will be delivered today from Amazon. Never saw it at the theaters, because I don't go to theaters. 🙂 Looking forward to watching it.

I was just exaggerating. Truth of the matter is, when a movie is not available on BD, I'll pick up the HD version on the iTunes Store. And I always redeem my digital copies that come with my BD purchases, for portable viewing. 🙂 I just refuse to buy a DVD now a days. The only way I'd buy a DVD is if it is not available on BD or iTunes Store.

i just bought the shield complete series on dvd from amazon for $30. it's not available on bluray and wasn't even aired in hd, so i don't know if an hd version will ever be available. it's 29 discs too, so at just over $1/disc, not too bad!

not sure how it'll look on the big screen though heh, might look kinda shitty.

I've never redeemed a single "digital" copy, even though I probably have 40 or more bundles that came with them.

For me it's Make MKV + Handbrake so I can more easily put it on the devices I want to.

I'm not really sure if this movie would be any good without the theater experience. Sorry you missed out on IMAX 3D 🙁

some of us have the theater experience at home 🙂

(yes i know it's not imax though heh).

You also can't get ATMOS at home.

The Imax craze, with "3D" is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. How many of these showings are truly IMAX? Most of these are housed by standard, soulless multiplex, and is just a larger screen. Not real IMAX-spec theaters.

You have to go to a Discovery Center/Science Museum type place for a real IMAX theater.

damnitall, I hate marketers! 😡

Yeah there is a lot of LieMAX around here. It is very annoying since you are still paying a premium!
