Blu-Ray 3D with 60Hz monitor?

I never really bothered to research 3D because none of my equipment supported it, but I had a Newegg gift card and just ordered a Blu-Ray burner. Anyways, do you need a 120Hz monitor, or can it be done with 60Hz? If so what glasses would I need?

Here's what I have:

-LG Blu-Ray burner with Arcsoft TotalMedia Theater 5
-ATI HD 6870 video card
-Dell U2311H via DVI
 
the monitor doesn't have to be 120Hz but it does have to be a 3D capable monitor which the one you listed isn't. And you would use the glasses provided with the monitor or tv


Edit: I use a Lite-On Blu-ray Burner w/ 3D, HD 6950, and Vizio E3D320VX 32" 3D TV via HDMI

You'll find that monitors that support 3D over DVI are also 120Hz monitors, but 3D over HDMI does not require 120Hz support. Durvelle is right though, you monitor needs to be able to understand the 3D signal that is being sent, and I don't think any of the Dell UltraSharp monitors handle 3D.
 
Thanks for the info. I realized after posting that I already have a 3D capable player anyways (PS3).

I did more research and basically you need 50Hz+ per eye (so 100Hz+ effective) or it'll cause headaches/nausea.

no true. as my tv is only 60Hz so 30Hz per eye for Passive and 60Hz per eye for Active

How does that work with 720p60, which is used by all game consoles? To my knowledge, passive TVs work on a line-by-line basis and use filters to change between eyes.

Not to be hating on passive too much... I've been tempted a few times today to buy a LG set for my bedroom! There's a nifty deal for $800 right now, but that's probably a little more than I'd prefer. If it hit $600, then I'd probably bite before my credit card knew what hit it. 😉

i have 3 Passive Vizio 3D Tvs and 1 Active Acer H5360 3D Projector and i love them all


Edit:Works the same way except the console will up convert it to 1080p as there not native 1080p

Did more research, and I'm pretty sure you're wrong.

Active 3D with shutter glasses = 1920x1080 @120Hz, each eye sees an alternating frame, so 1920x1080 @60Hz for each eye.

Passive 3D with polarized glasses (your Vizio TV) = 1920x1080 @60Hz, each eye sees half the lines in each frame simultaneously, so 1920x540 @60Hz for each eye.

No, passive is still 60Hz. lol 😉 Your TV displays 1920x1080@60Hz, and each frame is divided in half (1920x540), so you still get 60Hz per eye...

Active = you split the refresh rate in half = you need 120Hz
Passive = you split the resolution in half = you can do it with 60Hz
