Bloomberg enters dem primary

We’ll see if he actually runs. Pretty clear it’s in response to Biden’s weak primary performance. Even if he gets in I’m not expecting much traction just like the other billionaires.

Bloomberg does have an effective and funded political operation that puts money into competitive races across the country. He should just put more time and cash into that.
 
I caught an article earlier today claiming that Bloomberg actually had a huge impact on the Virginia state legislature flip, largely driven by his gun control efforts. Maybe that is emboldening him.

He’s long had an effective political arm using his money. He’s personally bankrolled many successful environmental pushes and legal actions.

It’s really going to grate on Trump that he’s worth more for the several weeks this candidacy is likely to last.

I hate Donald Trump, we all hate Donald Trump, but if this is as good as democrats can do then maybe Donald Trump deserves to win.
Warren and Sanders are too looney with their ideas, Joe Biden isn't gonna do it, and Pete Buttigieg goes too much by the book and lacks that real life experience connection with the voters. Minorities will never go for Pete Buttigieg.
Surely there must be someone else hiding in the sidelines that could fit the bill and propose a real challenge to Donald Trump.

I have this feeling that democrats are betting the farm on the impeachment to defeat Donald Trump. But what is that tactic fails? You need a plan B if democrats are to defeat Donald Trump.

He was actually a pretty decent mayor here in NYC compared to the horrible times we had under Giulliani when we had like 3000 murders a year and crime in the streets.

What are you talking about. Guliani is largely credited with reducing crime in NYC, although its Bill Bratton who probably deserves the most credit.

What makes Warren and Sanders looney with their ideas? Their platform is based primarily on ideas that have been implemented in every major developed country on the planet.

I did live there. In my post, I even gave Bratton credit. I am contesting your claim that crime worstened under Guliani, which is not true.

Guiliani really deserves scorn. He decided to have a sky bunker across the street from a known terrorist target for the emergency command center (in 7 WTC) instead of putting it in Brooklyn with existing FDNY headquarters. It was Guiliani who failed to upgrade the shit radios the FDNY had that day, something that had been known since the 93 bombing. And it was Guiliani that took command of the cleanup of the site, but then didn't use his authority to mandate that people where appropriate PPE when on the pile.

Guiliani was and is a fraud.

A lot of things could have been handled better in the aftermath of 9/11. Guiliani received a lot of praise for his leadership, deservedly so. Had it not been for his prostate cancer diagnosis, he would have probably translated that praise into a Senate seat.

He deserves scorn for aligning himself to Trump.
 
Interesting...This will chafe Trumps ass, a REAL billionaire running against him. Is this a shot at Warren and Bernie's popularity? He's demonstrated he can work with diverse constituencies and complicated politics to achieve results. He also clearly understands that running a government is not the same as running a corporation.

It's not just the aftermath - it's the leadup to it. Some of the big fuckups - like the non-functioning FDNY radios - were because of Guiliani. He's just been successful at crafting his image as this heroic leader. He was just a phony.

It was pretty bad under Giulliani to begin with. It didn't really start getting under 500 murders a year till we had Bloomy and it came down to 300.

And muggings and street crime was still high then.

I personally think Will Bratton had a good idea in practice but the one that really made the city safe was Ray Kelly with Bloomberg.

And you might forget that Guilliani hired a crook named Kerik who had his eyes on sec of homeland security and that went up in flames because of corruption.
 
I like Bloomberg just fine, although he wouldn't be my first or second choice here. He was a good mayor!

One thing I notice is kind of weird about this is that he's described as entering the race super late - it's like three months until the first primary! Other countries would have entire elections in that period.

Much of the current research suggests that the economic turnaround in the city is largely responsible for the reduction in crime. Studies done since indicate that things like broken windows policing and stop and frisk had little to modest impacts on crime. What they and then 9/11 did however is basically enshrine NYPD as a kingdom all its own barely subject to the very laws they are supposed to enforce.
