Blood sugar crashing after lunch...

How do you combat blood sugar drops in the afternoon at work?

About an hour after I eat lunch my blood sugar always crashes. I can barely keep my eyes open and I become incredibly weak. This will last about 30 minutes and then as quickly as it came, I am wide awake again.

It doesn't seem to matter what I eat. I've tried eating lunches without any carbs at all. Would eating something sugary like raisins when it starts to crash help?

What worked for me was to eat smaller, much smaller, meals. To the point of still being hungry. Slamming coffee didn't help much at all. 🙁

What you do is drop trou, stand on your desk, and masturbate furiously.

Doesn't do sh*t for the afternoon slump, but now that you're unemployed you can go take a nap and not worry about your boss hollering at you.

Had a similar problem, found that a lighter lunch + making a conscious effort to stay hydrated while at work was helpful.

My doctor gave me some pills that prevent crashing like that. They work really good. Ironically they also make me eat less because blood sugar stays high for a long period of time 🙂

I always get sleepy at 2-3pm regardless if I eat or not though. Have since I was a kid. Taking a nap for 20-30 minutes always works though for me at least.

if you aren't eating high carb lunches perhaps you are just tired and this has nothing to do with blood sugar

It definitely sounds like a blood sugar issue. Being tired just leads to more tired, but the OP says he's tired for a short period then he's not tired anymore after a while.

That weird fluctuation was why I never ate lunch in school. I would actually feel more tired and hungry if I ate lunch than if I just went the whole day without eating anything.

Change what you eat at lunch - your either eating too many bad fats, or too much sugar.

If you drink a coke - sugar filled softdrink - your going to crash about 30 - 45 minute later. Do not drink anything with sugar in it for lunch.

Have you actually measured your blood glucose levels?

This. Meters on sale are often $10-15 with 5-10 test strips, or ask a diabetic friend to help. Over a day, test on waking, before each meal, and about 2 hours after each meal. Your blood sugar levels will be highest about 2 hours after you eat, and it's important to see how fast they return to normal.

That after lunch tired feeling you describe is often from high blood sugar, not low. The last thing you want to do if you are pre-diabetic is to pound more sugar in an effort to keep awake.

And you don't have to necessarily be pre-diabetic. It could be that you just can't metabolize the same amount of food or sugary drinks that you use to.

do you KNOW your blood sugar is crashing, or do you suspect it is? if you have a meter and are getting low (or high) readings, talk to your doctor.

what do you do for work? i'd probably base my diet more around the types of activities if i were you..

i usually eat 2 different choices of fruit in the morning - orange or grapefruit and maybe fresh cut pineapple along with a banana... some coffee maybe a egg and cheese muffin... never anything sugary... i try to eat a little here and there during the day before lunch so I can take a rest and not stuff myself during lunch... i also during the Gatorade G1 and G3 drinks like no tomorrow.. i do a very physical job and they help tremendously
