Blogging system with multiple authors

The computer teacher wanted me to implement a blogging system so that her students can have their own blogs. Will wordpress and the likes allow students to have their own website. I guess it would be in the following url form (http://blogs.domain.com/studentsname).

I've setup blogs for personal use but to have it for more than one person, I've never done it. I guess what I want is a system like blogger.com so our user can register and create their own blogs.
 
Investigate either pLog or the LiveJournal engine (you can run it on your own server... though it doesn't play very well in a shared hosting environment, IIRC).
