A fried of mine just bought a PNY GeForce FX 5700 Ultra to upgrade the video in his Compaq Presario 6000. He asked me to take a look at the system a few days after he was finished, just to make sure he did everything correctly. View the results:

That is the 56K modem almost completely blocking the intake of the videocard's cooler. Funniest part is that he doesn't even use the modem, he has broadband from Comcast. I removed the stupid thing and the GeForce is breathing much easier. Also found this:

He didn't realize that the Compaq had an onboard NIC and added a PCI unit. I removed that as well.

O.K., so he's not the sharpest tool in the shed! I'm waiting for the MOBO makers to get a clue and drop those PCI slots down a bit to clear some room for the new generation of video cards.
Would think the airflow of the entire case has been improved. But that's why folks are charged for support calls... because they are bad drivers.

I didn't run any before and after benchmarks or take temperature readings, but common sense says that cooling was less than optimal with the modem covering the fan. I did ask if he had experienced any system freezes or reboots and he hadn't. The computer is on all the time and he's been playing Everquest with all the settings up all week long. The thermostat in his apartment is kept fairly low. If it had been summertime the story probably would have been very different.
