Blockbuster won't be much of a competitor to Netflix

Well shit, so much for an alternative to Netflix.

Looks like it's only available to Dish suscribers, and only 4,000 titles.

The combination satellite, mail, and streaming service is pretty massive: 100,000 DVDs by mail, 4,000 movies streaming by web, and 3,000 to your TV. In keeping with the old Blockbuster plans, you'll be able to exchange your movies in store and get access to 3,000 games by mail.
Adding the new streaming service will start at $10 a month for existing Dish Network subscribers—expect to pay more if you want more than one DVD at a time. New subscribers will get one year free if they subscribe before the end of January. What about the rest of us? Too bad! Blockbuster Movie Pass wiil be available only to Dish Network subscribers—at least for now.

You're looking at this all wrong. As a traditional TV provider, Dish Network already has extensive programming deals, so it theoretically should be easier for them, and subsequently Blockbuster, to acquire streaming deals and content. This is only the beginning of a huge advantage over many of the streaming players out there.

I just switched to Blockbuster. I get DVD's just as fast as Netflix, if not faster. For $14.99 I can have 2 Blu-Rays or videogames. Maybe I'll reconsider Netflix when they get games, but so far I'm liking BB.

I was under the impression they were going to be offering a streaming service similar to netflix. I'm not going to get Dish, just so I can stream 3,000 movies.

Kind of dissapointed.

Netflix will never get games.

...but Qwikster will!

😛

I sub to the Blockbuster DVD/bluray/Game by mail plan. It was a better mix for us than Netflix's DVD plan. I sometimes wanted a game, but didn't want to pay normal rental prices nor would utilize GameFly enough. Plus there's a Blockbuster on my way to work so it's easy as hell to do the unlimited in-store swap. We still hung onto the Netflix streaming though.

However, seeing as how this plan is streaming + a DVD/bluray/Game by mail for only $10 vice our current disc only plan for $13, it actually is a good deal. I'm probably going to be switching to Dish this week because of it (might have to put it in the girlfriend's name to get the year free) and the new intro prices Dish is running right now. I can save $70/mo for a year for the new customer bit over my DirecTV plan, can get a Slingplayer integrated DVR, and even after the special the price is still lower than with DirecTV.

But, I'm probably a pretty niche case. I doubt most people would have a local Blockbuster to do the exchanges, and the offer by itself is pretty marginal for a switch. For us, it's actually stupid NOT to swtich. If it were just me, I'd not have any cable/sat TV at all since I never watch it by myself, but meh it keeps the missus and company entertained.
