Hi mods,

As the title says, please can we stop new users from either posting links or posting new threads? It would stop nearly all spam.

We've considered it and have declined to do so. One of the big draws for new members to this forum is getting help, either with computer problems or just planning out your next build. Blocking links generally prevents the latter, and blocking new threads inhibits both of those. So as much as we'd like to do it, we need to think of the newbies.

Do you really need to post links to plan a build?

I think the positives outweigh the negatives. If I was a new user and wanted to post about a build, I could post my thread, give my requirements, and say these are the parts I was looking at. When a mod sees the thread, he can immediately authorize the user to post links.

How many spam posts do we see everyday versus how many new users post help me with this build thread? I mean, most of the build threads we see belong to existing users.

How about requiring Mod approval to display posts from members with less than 10 posts? That would block a ton of spam.

We don't have enough moderator resources to do that.

Spammers are not outnumbered by new members.

Now if only the people who want the mods to do more pro-bono work would be willing to pay a subscription fee, say $100/yr, then we could hire more hands and keyboards to do all the filtering and activity some of you want us to be doing.

But until that happens, everyone will continue to get exactly what they paid for ;)

And that might mean (brace yourselves) having to turn a blind eye or two towards the random and infrequent unwanted spam thread/post until such time that one of our few pro-bono moderators has the time to dispatch it. (oh the horrors, I know, pm me if you need an e-hug :p)
