Block Limewire

Hey, im trying to block limewire on my home network to save on some bandwidth...

Ive blocked ports 6346:6347 on tcp/udp but no luck there, still downloading like crazy. Any ideas?

You can't just close the program?? Or uninstall?

Or, who's running the program and "downloading like crazy" that you have to block the traffic from the router end and not the actual pc?

find out what ports it's ACTUALLY using and block those. I help a small ISP to block P2P all the time (spelled out in the TOS)

Its a shared house and some people dont want to stop downloading, so, its not fair on the others who have to put up with 56k like connections. So i want to block it in my router, ive put IP filters on 6346:6347 thinking those were the ports being used, clearly theyre not. Anyone have a clue how i can detect which ports are being used by limewire? Apart from commview as the trial period i had on it has run out.

This is like the little boy with finger in dike.
As soon as you plug up one hole the water bursts through another.

Just about all the latest versions of file-sharing software let you change the ports you can use. All the person has to do is change their ports (the ones being forwarded/triggered) and then update the info in their app.

You will win the battle and lose the war.

Find them and stop them.

Yep I agree with shortylickens. The only other option would be to get a packet shaping device or setup a linux box as your gateway instead of your router and have it do packet shaping. This is NOT something that is easy to do and is not recommended unless you have a fair bit of linux knowledge.

Kazaa was 1214.... I block it and 6346/6347.

I believe most of those programs can be changed to work across different ports. You may be stuck figuring out which system is doing it and see if you can slap a QOS policy on it to limit what it gets.

What device are you using?

All of you talking about changing port settings do realize that the average limewire user has no idea what a port is let alone how to change it. They're downloading music from LimeWire for Pete's sake.
