How is the single player campaign in D2 compared to BGI and II?

D2 is slashing enemies and getting cool items.
BGI and BGII is all about the story - with cool unique items.

It's like asking how do chips and cola compare to soup - both are food but that's about it :)

Also, I think BGII hasn't aged one bit - thanks mostly to some amazing mods.

So D2 is more like Dungeon Siege?

Ya d2 is similar to DS but a lot better. The best difference between D2 and BG is that it doesn't use the archaic D&D "do the math in your head cus computers aren't invented yet" system.

I'd like to see them retool magic and rare item generation a bit to make it possible to find ones that are actually good. As it stands, rare items worth using seem less common than high runes. You end up having the only "good" gear combinations be uniques and runeword items.

Yeah, and when the game first came out all the best gear (esp weapons) were rares. They really went downhill and are definitely pretty useless now.

Play classic, rares are the best gear and actual people play the game, not baalbots and spambots.

I played my share of classic, it was definitely pretty fun for a while. I got sick of doing cow runs with corpse explosion eventually and ended up back in expansion. There seemed to be a more adult crowd there though, and the ladder players were generally pretty cool and helpful.

D2 Exp (read jsp) is completely dominated by kids now

makes me wonder what D3 is going to be like since I would not be surprised if jsp turns out to be the dominant market for D3 transactions

jsp is http://www.d2jsp.org/

the site has trading forums that uses a currency called "forum gold"

D2 initially started out with a pure bartering system. player A and B have a collection of items and they show off what they got and try to work out a deal if there are items of interest to trade for. later on, SoJs became the dominant currency due to duping, it's 1x1 size, and use value as an item. once D2 Exp rolls around, high runes become the dominant currency for the same reason as SoJs. eventually, the D2 jsp forum gold becomes the dominant currency because the D2 community decreases, ease of use (lesser inventory management of HRs), and the ability to purchase forum gold with actual money.

I haven't followed D3 news too closely, but it would be interesting to see if Blizzard actually comes up with gameplay mechanics that make in-game currency valuable. otherwise, I see jsp's forum gold being the place for D3 currency.

an increase in resolution, without a decrease in unit size, make magic and rune finding easier, the game just isn't rewarding enough, it takes months and months to make a "real" descent competative character, unless you plan on eBaying gears, but I doubt blizzard would ever stop leeching on our lives this easily

Firstly, no need to keep unit size large thanks to the alt key. Secondly, I've made a fully decked out hammerdin, ubers smiter, mf sorc, + enchant soso, sing baba etc in ~1 month of hardcore playing (in hardcore mode no less). The more you know about the game the quicker you can build up your account. Thirdly and most important, go get a life, a real one.
