bleeping songs

i want to play some songs in some mixed company and would like to bleep out certain words like they do on the radio

is there an easy, and cheap, way to accomplish this? :)

if possible i would just like to bleep out the vocals and leave the instrumentals... again like on the radio

I'm sure if you get your hands on the master tapes you can do it.

do you mean actually replacing the offending word with a beep, or do you mean removing the vocal entirely?

Find the radio edits, or find new friends that won't get their panties in a bunch if they hear the f word.

You won't be able to do this without having the physical tracks available. Artists / whoever usually accomplish their "radio edits" by bleeping out the word on the vocal "track" while keeping the instrumental "track" still playing normally. The best you're gonna do with an mp3 is cut out the sound entirely in whatever specific part you want since an mp3 is the combination of all the individual tracks of a song.

That is to say, it is not possible to do what you're asking if the only thing available to you is a sound file.

If you want the entire vocal out, you may be out of luck unless the vocal track is dead center in the stereo field.
By inverting the phase of the stereo track and playing the two identical yet phase reversed tracks against each other , one can use Common Mode Rejection to eliminate that which is dead center. Easily done in any waveform editing program. Level matching is critical

Of course, any other sounds, snare , kick drum and or bass guitar which usually are panned center will be affected as well. In addition, any stereo effects added to those tracks such as reverb will still be audible when the tracks are combined and played back, rendering the effect more or less successful, dependent on level of critical evaluation.

there was a device made awhile back called the Thompson Vocal Eliminator which did this to a greater or lesser degree.

If Alien's method is too much, I have had success in the past by highlighting the offending section in a wave editor and making it play backwards. Since it is usually a small fraction of a second, the music "still there" (i.e. a note that is being held would sound the same backwards and forwards). Not great, but not too complicated.

Remember to do it like they do on television, at least up here on some Canadian stations. They'll take out the mother in MF.
