Is there a cheaper alternative than paying my dentist $400 to have my teeth bleached? Do any of the over the counter teeth bleaching systems actually work?

There is an infomercial on tv for whitening stuff, and you can pick up various kits from the drugstore for quite cheap...

As im typing this post up i am using teeth whitening gel. I got it from my doctor it runs about $300 but he wrote it off as something else so my insurance paid. Its called Nite White Excel 2 (www.discusdental) u gotta wear it twice a day for about an hour for 10 days. This is my 2nd day using it. The reason why its better to get these from ur dentist is because the dentist makes a molding of your teeth and then gives u a mouth-piece type like of plastic that you wear.

I cant get my dentist to do that for me. I have enough in flex benefits to pay for it, but they wont pay for cosmetic.
I dont want to spend a fortune on trial and error whitener that doesnt work. I know that the dentist is the best, but its a lot of money to spend. I get my braces off next month, after 2 years! I want to whiten my teeth too.

Get the dentist one. I've done it, and it made a huge difference. Also, you can reuse the moldings again and again if you need to rebleach your teeth.

i tried white strips. $39 , they are just bleach gel on little strips. if you get the ones on the mouth guards its the same thing except it costs like $9. chemicals were exactly the same. also the mouth guard ones cover up more of your back teeth so it doesnt look as wierd

be careful with the over the counter bleaching agents. They dissolve the glue on caps and bridges. Read the fine print!

I've brushed my teeth with OxiClean with no noticable side effects (other than whiter teeth). You can get a huge tub of the stuff from Wal-Mart for around $20. I'm no chemist, but my understanding is that all OxiClean is is very concentrated Hydrogen Peroxide. (The stuff in the brown bottle at the pharmacy is only a 5% concentration).

I mixed up about 50% OxiClean and about 50% water so that it was kinda pasty and brushed my teeth for a few minutes with it. I tried to keep it on my teeth as much as possible and avoid contact with the gums as best I could. Then I rinsed for about 5 minutes. All in all, it wasn't so bad. My gums were a bit tender for about an hour afterwards, but I'm not sure if that was due to a chemical burn or abrasions from the granular OxiClean. My teeth were noticibly whiter afterwards, and I'd be willing to do it again. Oh, it also makes your gums turn white, but that goes away after a few minutes. If anyone else has tried this, please back me up...

The strips are don't last nearly as long. Without smoking and heacy drinking, BriteSmile (from your dentist) can last 3-4 years if you take good care of your teeth.

<< any sensitivity after treatment? >>

Oh yes. Its different for everyone, their degree of sensitivity, but everyone has some sensitivity after the first two or three bleeching/whitening gel treatments that use peroxide as their active ingredient. I recommend starting at around 10 - 12% Carbamide Peroxide, and then if you tolerate that well after a FEW treatments, then move up to the stronger stuff if you want (16, 18, 21%).

Do NOT use this stuff if your teeth and gums are not in good condition. If you have even minor gum irritation, untreated cavities, or gum disease, this can irritate the heck out of your gums and the nerve of your tooth. That's how I found out I had a cavity. The gel will not "harm" your tooth and nerve, but it will send you up the freaking wall if there is a broken spot on your enamel and the gel seeps in to the pulp and nerve of the tooth. Don't say I didn't warn you.

The gum irritation is usually minor if your gums are healthy. Many people report increased tooth sensitivity to temperature, especially after the first treatment, but it goes away after a few days. If you have REAL discomfort or sensitivity that doesn't seem to get better after a few days, STOP using it and consult with your dentist.

Most of this stuff on the market is the SAME active ingredient used by dentists, but they have the advantage of customizing your mouth trays so that it forms a good fit. This allows the gel to make contact with the tooth longer and helps minimize irritation to your gums. You want to bleach your teeth, not your gums. ;-)
