I use the C/S on all configurations where there is not a slave present.

If Master and slave, they need to be jumpered as such.
(Although I can remember setting systems up using drives from different manufacturers that required settings other than those as recommended by the drive mfg.)
>>

Untrue. The whole point of CS is to do away with having to configure the jumpers. The end drive is the master, the middle is the slave.

Wow.. I didn't notice how much faster this drive was over my 30 GB 7200 until today when I was unzipping some large files.. I swear it took at least 50%-75% less time!!!

dude... i'm gettin' a double-u-dee!!!
actually, i got mine today. can i say what a great deal? just installed, partitioned, and formatted it... wow! this thing was a dream to work with. i've got all my data transferred, and can't wait until dell runs another great deal like this. i'll be needing another one soon.
should've ordered another one.

I wish I would have ordered another one too, especially for $125. I just got mine partitioned, formatted, and got XP installed on it. I like it a lot so far, as I'm in the process of transferring files and it is pretty stinkin fast compared to older drives I have.

ohhh boy.. i really did it good this time!! all of mine came today. 4 oem and 4 retail. i cant wait to install and test them out this weekend. heres a pic of the DOTY several times over : )

uh oh, i have a feeling this is gonna sir up some trouble

What is everyone's experiences with leaving on or turning off Indexing Service on 2K or XP/NTFS with these? I'm disabling it and it's taking forever to apply the attributes. I got two WD1200JBs filled up to having 42 and 44 GBs free.

Anybody disable indexing and notice any appreciable speed/performance gain?

Also, regarding the NTFS vs FAT/32 debate, if you run a gaming system I recommend NOT installing games on an NTFS partition. A lot of games have problems running under NTFS.

G
>>

Absurd. The file system is completely transparent to the application.

>>

Really? Well then, Mr Know-It-All, why do several games (like Light & Dark) cause many people problems under NTFS, while those running FAT32 have no problems? Your statement seems to indicate that you don't understand the fundamental fact that FAT32 and NTFS write data to the disk in different ways. This is borne out by your earlier statement that "FAT32 should not be used on driver over 32GB", which is untrue.

Well, that's sure not how it's working for many of us! When I set up the WD1200JB as a Slave (and jumper it as such) to my WD274B, no problem. However, when the WD1200JB is the Master (and only drive), _only_ C/S works. How do you explain that one?

Something to add about NTFS vs. FAT32. I multi-boot with Win9x, so I use FAT32 because I want to see my Win98 partition when I'm in XP. Otherwise, I might consider NTFS.

I've got a question about the difference between the $187, 3 year warrantee drive and the $125 Dell warranteed drive. I noticed on the label that the 3 yr warrantee drive has details about jumper configurations and the $125 OEM drive does not. I wonder why?

My question is this.. It shows that if you want to run a drive as a Master without a slave present, you leave the jumper off all together. If you have it as a master with a slave present on the IDE channel, it shows to put the jumper on the master position. Would you think that this would be the same for both drives even though one does not show this?

BTW.. It shows the differences on the labels in the photo just posted of the 8 drives (4 Dell warranteed-- 4 WD warranteed).

I plan to run both as a Master on their own IDE channels using a ATA controller card. I'm guessing that I will leave the jumpers off on both drives?

Also.. The model numbers are slightly different between the two drives. The WD warranteed drive is: "WD100JB-00CRA1" and the Dell warranteed drive is: "WD100JB-75CRA0". I'm not going to do this now, but I'd like to eventually RAID 0 these drives. Are they the same drives other than the warrantee? I just want to be sure.

TIA,

Sal

Dunno about yours, but mine had the proper jumper position silkscreened on the PCB underneath the jumper pins. Has positions labeled for Master, Slave, Cable Select, etc.

<< Herbiec......$1grand worth of drives....lmao.....what the hell will you store on all that? >>

damn... i used to think 1 gig of porn is enormus, brotherman is going to be so dry with almost 1 terabyte of it...

by the way, i just wanted to add that this drive is awesome (like it hasn't been said enough). I didn't think HD would make this much of a difference until i tried this one out, and that's replaced a 30G 7200 drive with this one, not a stone age drive.

for example, my xp boot up screen, the one with the scrolling bar, my system got past that screen without the scrolling bar past 1/3 of the way. with my old drive it had to go through almost 3 times. Also, the drive makes a huge difference when i do some heavy data in/output. Before my system took 4-5 minutes to extract a 700 mb rar archieve, now it does it in 57 seconds flat. amazing...

for those who got it, congrats, and sorry for those who didn't.

last for the dude who got 8 of them, you better use it all and not egay it to make profit, 'cause i tried to hard not to get extras then egay it to make a profit, so more people can get in on the deal.

I think it's you who are confused. Easy one first-about FAT32 on large drives:
NTFS_FAT32

Now then, if a 4 year old game has issues on a NTFS-aware OS the root cause is something other than the file system. If switching to FAT32
fixed it, fine but there are 100 things in between that could be the actual cause. No no modern application running on a Supported
OS will care about the file system. And data is not "write data to the disk in different ways". A platter still uses cylinders, sectors, and
clusters regardless. The logical layout is of course different, but a bit on a disk is a bit on a disk. 1 or 0, that is all.

Explain what? Read what I wrote again. It seems your statement backs mine up. CS should work with any configuration, as long as the
cable supports it.

youre right : ).. i love controversy

4 of them in raid5 for divx ripping/storage. i gave away 2... and the other 2 in office machines.

thats right. thats one easy way of telling if you have oem or retail. you can also check your warranty on westerndigital.com

do i sense a little jealousy? whats wrong with freaks who egaying thier drives for profit? (btw its not as easy as it sounds) i see no problem in a little capitalism.. and besides it gives the peeps who missed out on the deal to get the drive for cheap. as far as i can tell dell had no limit in the number of drives they could sell. i could have ordered 20 more and it wouldnt have stopped people from ordering. all my drives were all made less than 2 weeks ago... and i know there are people out there who still havent gotten them yet probably cause WD is manufacturing theirs as we speak.

for all those who got in on the deal congrats.. cuz it was defintely DOTY. those who didnt.. snooze, you lose... good luck on ebay and all 8 of mine are accounted for. in retrospect, i should have order 4 more at $125... enjoy

Salvador, you must have missed my post in which I said I have mine running on separate IDE channels with the jumpers on both set to master. I have mine in a RAID 0 array, but they will work in any system with the jumper on master, or with a ATA card. The moral of all of this is just that you cannot put two devices on one single IDE channel both set to master. Also remember that any devices on a single IDE channel will only be as fast as the slowest on the cable.

I bought two extra to ebay. What sucked was that some idiots bought 20+ and flooded the damn market with them driving the prices down for everyone. They didn't have to put 10 up at one time. Come on..
