Are you sure that your reaction as noted above wasn't your contrary political opinion influencing your feelings? It sounds like you got angry/irritated and then searched for a way to attack the people you highlighted.

Edit: Not to say that isn't entirely human or that any of us haven't fallen prey to those feelings at one point or another. But I think you can see that the vast majority of people here disagree with you (not even one person agrees) so we might be on to something.

Actually, it has nothing to do with my political opinions. Did I support Hillary in that thread? Yes I did, because some people liked to distort the facts. However, I can honestly say that I would have been offended if somehow Hillary were a republican, and some ultra liberal tried to get away with the stereotypical comment. Ultimetly, offending racial stereotypes goes a little too far, imo, however, the mods have the last word on what they choose to moderate.

Yep and you'll have to excuse us if we choose not to open up a can of worms because a member or two are hyper-sensitive.

Hey, I've been dating and otherwise social in interacial environments for decades, but that's nothing compared to EagleKeeper. The purpose was not to offend you. Obviously, you do not know that it is a word used to offend jews.

I have no idea what the bolded part means, however, having X/X/X does not give you a free pass in blindly stating racial stereotypes.

Ha! Yeah, I forgot, or my mind mercifully refused to compute, that Hacp was trying to call Eaglekeeper a racist! LOL!

But to associate Chinatown with this family ,without any connection other than the fact that they're chinese ,is my problem with what you wrote.

Was what he wrote not a racial stereotype? What other basis did he have for using Chinatown, other than the fact that the person was Chinese?

Wait a second... let me see if I understand this whole situation correctly.
1. There are areas in major cities called "Chinatown." This has been proven.
2. The citizens in those areas are predominantly of a Chinese heritage. Obvious.
3. The citizens in those areas call their area "Chinatown" and seem proud of their heritage. Again demonstrated to be true.

So, you're offended if someone implied you have something to do with Chinatown?

That'd be like someone smart being offended if someone said "why don't you go back to the university with the rest of the geeks."

I just don't get it. What is offensive about it even if it was meant in that fashion?? Are you embarassed to be associated with the wonderful people living in those communities?

The above response was made as a Member not a Moderator. Because I've participated as a Member I cannot Moderate this thread nor would I want to waste my time doing so! I'm totally within my rights here as a member to mock you for being ridiculous and I suggest you not go back to P&N until you can grow some thicker skin!

The term Chinatown is racist:roll:

I take it you aren't Chinese. It is offensive to me when someone uses Chinatown to describe me or my actions. It is a degrading word.

Then ask other chinese to stop referring to their neighborhoods as Chinatown.

If the post was about the Kennedys, and someone posted that they should walk down the streets of Hyannisport, should other liberal new england democrats be aghast?

Sorry I lost it, I think you are being a little too sensitive. It's not as if he said Chinaman. If the term Chinatown was so racist wouldn't you think the city of SanFrancisco, one of the most liberal and PC places in the US, would stop using it to promote tourism?

I did not coin the term. It is not some strange insult that originated in China. Its used as a deragatory term in the United States. People in the United States knowningly use it to degrade Chinese people.

No people don`t!!
How can you possibly know what all people in the US think?
ChinaTown is NOT a racial term...get over it......
I have many chinese friends who would laugh in your face.....

Hacp -- Don't take this as any kind of anti-Chinese slur, but, unless you enjoy being the piñata in this thread, NOW would be a great time to STFU.

Note the use of the authentic Chinese character in piñata.

Hacp, here is a challenge for you. Here is a word: "the". You have ten minutes in which to devise a way in which you are offended by it. It is painfully clear that you are fully capable of doing so successfully. You really do need to find some happiness in your life dude. Good luck. I'll time you.

It's amazing how a situation that doesn't even require moderator intervention somehow attacts the whole lot of them...

The only use of the word 'chinatown' that I've ever heard has been the description of it as a PLACE. If I were Asian and someone called me Chinatown, I might even be flattered by it. ;)

After reading the thread and the OP's history, I have absolutely no qualms in telling Hacp to cut it out!!!

Stop stirring shit where there is none. You are coming dangerously close to a call out. If you truly believe the crap you posted, then BooFriggenhoo. There was NOTHING racially derogatory in what was posted.

If you have a further problem, PM Derek.

Chinatown, K-town, Little India, Little Armenia, Little Saigon. These are all names of Ethnic enclaves. I have never heard them to be used as racial slurs. Most if not all of these communities embrace these terms and even fight for it.

To clarify my above post, I just spent a great deal of time researching chinese slurs. My vocabulary of words I won't use just increased significantly. Your post is apparently the *only* place on the internet where someone believes the term "chinatown" is derogatory. Please support your accusation with at least one valid source on the Internet that agrees with you that "chinatown" is a slur.

What's really ironic is that you openly used the term "Chinese" to describe people in or decended from people from the country of China. What's ironic about it is that "Chinese" is actually a slur used by the British around the WWI era. here

Ok, time is waaaaay up. What'd you come up with? C'mon, you're being graded on this. It's 60% of your total grade for the semester, make it count!

People want to be so PC that it ends up twisting the meaning/conversation.

Eskimo != Inuit != other tribes

If his daughter-in-law considers herself to be Eskimo, then what would be wrong.
She could also be called Native American, Native Alaskan, Native Canadian depending on where she lives(lived).
