Blatant Discrimination against asian american students in college admissions...

Yup, when I was on the adcom for UCSF med school, you got extra points for being black or hispanic, while being asian or indian knocked you down a couple.

So just lie on the damn application and call yourself white. Think they'll have the balls to kick you out of school for it after the fact? Good luck with that PR mess.

Fixed.

White = no more or less points.
Black = Maybe less points needed.

😱

There has been speculation of that at University of Washington too. Several of my cousins did not get in who put Chinese as ethnicity while the ones who put Cambodian seemed to fair better.

Those are obviously both Asian, but one is obviously a minority compared to the other.

Didn't read the whole article. However, I can pretty much tell why this is. I think out society puts much higher expectations on Asians than others. They're expected to be smarter and studier harder so schools expect higher SAT scores.

Makes me wonder whether the application process should be anonymous. No names, only raw test scores and work portfolios. Don't know how they could do that but it would eliminate these problems, and the need for affirmative action.

Affirmative action is put into place because most black and Hispanic students aren't up to par.

They could issue an application number as the only ID in the selection process, and not ask any questions that don't pertain to academics. I'd support that 100%. Race and sex have no place in performance oriented selection.

This may be a way of keeping the demographics of their classes somewhat in line with the demographics of the country. But even at that, according to the stats in the article Asians are over-represented by a factor of 3x - 4x in these elite schools.

They may need higher scores, but they sure in hell don't have to speak nearly any English to become a TA.

The Asian chick attempting to teach my statistics class by discussing the wise and beautiful woman of the blue ball was priceless.

There was a rumour going around when I was trying to get into medschool that the faculty had a 'quota' of Asian students that they weren't supposed to go over when selecting med students. Obviously, seeing as I'm asian, this was kind of worrying. But I got in anyway. And there are a lot of Asians in our class, so I don't know how much fact is in the rumour. But to have actual proof of such discrimination...this is shocking.

If you put false information on an application, they wouldn't need any other excuse to drop you from the course. Most application forms have a disclaimer below where you sign saying that by signing you certify that the information you gave in the form is correct and that if it's found out you gave misleading or wrong information then punitive actions may be brought against you.

No surprise here. Schools check their demographics and want minority students. "Asians" are no longer much of a "minority" at these schools. I don't see how anyone could be outraged with this, and not affirmative action as a whole.

At UCLA, I remember seeing a chart a few years back showing that the average score for an Asian student admitted to UCLA was something crazy like 400 points higher than the average black student who was admitted. And this was back when the SAT only went up to 1600 points, so that's a huge difference.

Since affirmative action was outlawed in CA, what they did was change how they graded applicants to give "bonus points" for attributes that (non-Asian) minorities are more likely to have.

We often use the term "sheet count" in one of my classes. The professor says "shit wise and beautiful woman". Its so hard to not laugh.

Asian americans & Glass Ceiling effect, ultra lame.

The stupidest thing is, American born asians can be completely different from their overseas counterparts. They could have IQs similar to white or hispanic/black races due to their conditions. Yet they're lumped as the same category with the whizzes from overseas on statistics.

I don't think it really has much to do with IQs. Also, those complaining about this, do you also disagree with the years of affirmative action where all minorities received preference over "whites"? I don't see how you could agree with one and not the other, or vice versa.

Hopefully my kids will be able to choose between Asian or White depending on which choice is more advantageous, unless the "One-Drop Rule" is reestablished.
