Blank screen on intel HD driver install

this apparently is not a new problem, but i cannot believe it exists:

I tried to install the standard intel HD drivers on a fresh W7 install and it blanks out immediately. I was using DVI, but apparently HDMI is affected too. the solution is to use VGA? I'm still at work so I haven't played with it yet. This is on a Z68 motherboard.
