Is this the folder? If not try to Google something called "File Unlock" or similar (I'm at work and can't search freeware sites) for a program that "unlocks" files Windows XP won't delete. I had a folder that had the same problem, the program let me delete it with no hassle.

Start/Run/cmd
cd to Desktop
<ctrl><alt><del>
kill explorer.exe
(In cmd prompt) del <folder name>
(In task manager) File/run/explorer.exe

The folder has no name and you cannot rename it

very bizarre.

Does he have anything else on the desktop? If so, just copy the stuff he wants to a temporary folder, delete the entire desktop directory, re-create it, and copy the stuff you want back.

What operating system are you running?

Also, did you try clicking on it and then hitting the "F2" key, to see if that lets you rename the folder?

For the past couple of years I have been using ERD commander to kill stubborn files and folders.

Its probably a folder the use lost rights to see from a curruption. If its on his desktop its either the shared desktop icons or his own personal desktop icons. The fact it has no name leads me to suspect that its a link to a external folder that is no longer connected or is using a name that is beyond what the desktop can display.
