One of the top Firewall products for home users for cheaper than you can normally get it. Network ICE hasn't ran a promotion in a while and now BestBuy is helping them do so.

$29.99 - $20.00 rebate = $9.99

This is top two Firewall products out there I do belieave and ZoneAlarm v2.0 being the other contender but they are Free. This is for those who want to test out the BlackICE Defender software but didn't want to plonk down $30+ bucks and not get anything to show for it. You get physical software boys and girls :)

I've been running it for nearly a year and have been quite satisified with it.

eh..I think I'll stick to my copy of ZoneAlarm...it's free!

But BlackICE Defender IS a good product...and at that price, it's a great product!

Zone Alarm Pro is NOT free. Zone alarm is though.

I say go with ZA Pro versus Black Ice because experience with both. ZA Pro is much easier to use and very easy to configure compared to Black Ice. But for basics, if you're not that worried of security, ZA free version is pretty good too.

The best part of ZA Pro is the "restricted zone" in "advanced security" area. You can block any web address you don't want little billy to go to, such as pr0n sites and annoying banner advertisements such as the "Punch the damn Monkey" ones....

Well my idea behind the post was to give users a way to test out BlackICE Defender for cheap since I don't think they have a good trial version like Zonealarm has. $10 isn't that much to put down for firewall software either so give it a try I like it :)

Understood your intentions. $10 is definately not a bad price to try out a piece of software.

I bought it for $39.95 after testing it for a few weeks on a cable-modem hook-up. After seeing the blocked attacks (and a few innocent hits that were reported as being blocked as well - it reports everything) I had no problem paying full price. At $10.00 it's well worth it, especially if you don't have to buy ME or anything else to get the rebate. It's essentially plug and play with th eonly set-up being the level of protection you want and enabling "trusted" for the local IP of your other system(s)if you're sharing the connection. Every time there has been a browser update, there's been an update release of BiceDefender within a day or two to insure compatibility. No Complaints here! (no, I don't work for them - just a satisfied customer)

Yeah Blackice is definitely a decent firewall... but it's much too sensitive, which i think is one of the reasons for it's success. People get paranoid when they see all those pings. To me it's more annoying than anything. And it's an extremely fragile software, seems to go down with every windows update until a new patch is avail.

Personally, i love ZA. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. And it's free too!

But for $10, blackice is definitely a HOT deal.

Dunno about BlackIce, but with ZoneAlarm (non-pro), I have probelms with Napster.

If security set to "high", about %80 of transfers from my fail
set to "medium", about %20 fail
set to "low", about %5 fail.

This is after letting it run for about 24hrs each setting, with upto 4 GB of data downloaded from my system.

Maybe BlackIce will do better.

I've ran BlackICE with Napster without any problems. Are you behind a NAT or Proxy server? perhaps the NAT or Proxy server needs tweaking?

Purchase November's Maximum PC magizine. It's on the free CD that comes with the mag. It's a dollar cheaper and you get a good mag. Zone Alarm is also on the CD

I used ZoneAlarm, but the settings constantly reset for me on my 'puter.

Finally, I got tired of it so I disabled it, then got screwed over by a guy using SubSeVen over ICQ :( Lost control of my 6-digit UIN, and had to clean reinstall Win98... Arg! Felt so goddamn stupid for turning ZA off.

I'm running both BlackIce and ZoneAlarm on my computer. I was advised to do this by my Computer repair instructor 2 months ago when I got my cable modem installed. What one doesn't catch the other one does and I haven't had any problems using them alone or together. ZoneAlarm is excellent for a freebie, but if you really want to be safe get BlackIce too, at that price it's a steal.

Ummm I'm somewhat of a newbie to all this firewall stuff. Can someone tell me the benefits of having a firewall? And where do I go to download this free Zonealarm software. One more question. Does this slow down your computer at all or hog much of the system resources? Thanks in advance!

Several weeks ago, I got the deal on Mcafee Office at Best Buy, and it included Mcafee Firewall, but I haven't tried it yet. Does anybody know how it compares to Zone and Black Ice?

Computerlady, and I thought I was the only one that did that. I actually find Zone Alarm real annoying. I sometimes turn it off because the little box appears every time there is a suspicious activity and most of time it isn't. I also prefer Black Ice, because it gives you an idea of what the suspicious activity was. Anyhow I hear from my Network Admin friend that these aren't enough. I need a few othe things to protect my comp. Especially when I get DSL next month. It's scary what he's seen, but I have no room for a linux box.
