BlackICE Defender Firewall @ Bestbuy for $7.99 after rebate

For those who missed it a while back BestBuy is running another special on this Firewall Software Suite. It's even cheaper this time and perhaps has pricematch potential.

$27.99 - $20.00 rebate = $7.99

I think Circut City or CompUSA has this also for around $29.99 - $10 instant - $10 rebate = $9.99.

Another great game for cheap is Halflife and it's CounterStrike Addon.
Half Life is $9.99 and CounterStrike is $7.99 @ BestBuy

What is firewall protection? Doesn't it protect you from getting mega spammed by hackers or something.

What version is it on Black Ice Defender? I have Norton's Internet Security 2000.. but I've read some good reviews of Black Ice Def. This is 1/3 the price of Norton....

IF YOU ACCESS THE NET THROUGH CABLE MAKE SURE YOU GET A FIREWALL!! About a year ago, my computer disk drive was deleted. I left the puter on and when I got home from work it was locked up. When I rebooted, like 60 windows popped up that said "Get a Firewall" and the hard drive was wiped, save for a few nudey pictures the hacker was so kind to leave me. SO, an $8 investment sounds like a great deal to me. You hath been warned!

It shouldn't matter what version it is - you can download updates for one year from the date of registration (current version is 2.1cn; available for updates)

You might want to research all the popular firewall's that are available.

This particular one... is known to send a message back to the hacker...
that has also been known to piss them off.... not neccessarily the best thing to do. It is best sometimes to maintain being simply invisible,
and leave it at that.

Check out ZoneAlarm.... it is free, and very easy to use.

BlackIce is a very good option. I personally just don't like that one feature.

Just my opinion.

GREAT PRICE though!!!!!!!!!!! I'll probably pick it up just for the low price. THANKS!

would I need this software if I'm connecting my dsl through a home network with a linksys router? The router claims to be the only externally recognizable device on my network. If that's true I shouldn't need the software, right? Then again, 7 bucks seems like a pretty good deal.

I second the vote for Zone Alarm.

It's free for personal use..no rebates, no hassles...it's great!

Of course, if you like having a box, cd, and a manual, go for BlackIce. It is also highly respected. 🙂

I bought a SMC router with a firewall, but I would still get a software firewall up for protection. I have both Zone Alarm and Black ice on my comp. I find that ZoneAlarm is annoying. Every little thing that has data coming back makes the stupid little notice go up. It annoyed me to no end so I end up shutting it off. I like that Blackice just notifies you with a beep and a change in the icon. But that a personal preference, some people like those notices. Just my 2 pennies.

Look into Hack Tracer...its the only one that shows you where exactly the person is located physically...and you have the option of reporting events to an online database to see if that person is a repeat offender...i guess its the beginnings of a hackerwatch community sorta...anyways i use it and it seems to work well...at least when i went to grc.com i was "stealth" under all sections.

anyhow just my 1.00-.98

The version is the newest out availble which is nice too so you don't have to download it.

v2.1cn I do belieave is the version number but don't quote that 🙂

Mysterie, you can disable the popup warnings on Zone Alarm. Go to Alerts and uncheck "Show the Alerts popup window."

Actually, I picked up Defender on Saturday, but I've heard it doesn't block outgoing traffic, only incoming--is that OK? I have ZA currently, but they monitor where I go with their "True Vector" technology, so the quicker I remove ad software from my computer, the better. Should I keep Defender?
