The best soultion is a 2 layer approach. You are looking for a program that opens all ports then whenever requests come in it accepts them and sends a reply like authorization not allow. Then get a packet sniffer and run it (especially overnight) it is the only thing that will deter above average hackers and will give you their network addy and ethernet mac for prosecution (and DO PROSECUTE attempts and success!). BI and ZA have a fatal flaw that makes them weak. They both rely on time to judge attacks and ip's to verify hack attemps. Both of these are easily manipulated by a hacker of any skill. Also I am able to ACK tunnel by both of them.

If you haven't read it yet, you really should:
GRC DOS Attacks

This is a VERY long story by Steve Gibson and many parts are quite technical.

I highly suggest you read it and share it with anyone you know that has a PC on a broadband connection or manages PCs at work. When you get to the parts that are too technical, skip over them but KEEP READING!

If you don't have a good background on how the Internet works, you should probably read his article The Internet first. Nobody here needs to read that though :)

I just find it interesting that dahole can do what steve gibson can't, nor norton's, sysgate and every other security testing site on the net.... I smell FUD and notice he doesnt say what is a good firewall *well if you are really paranoid or do have data to protect, spend a 150 or so and buy a hardware router*. Not that I care much, real hackers don't bother with "joe user", and zonealarm, sysgate, norton's are fine for the avg. user.

Heheh, if those bazillion computers that 13 year-old commandeered had had even just BlackICE Defender installed, he wouldn't have had access to those either. But yes, you're right can't argue with ZA for free vs. $40 for BI.

Blackice should do more R & D and design their software better then if they wanna charge for it. Either be a anti-virus or a firewall solution...not just an intrusion detector! A couple of years ago, there was a rumour that blackice was a sub7 trojan. Anyone else remember or heard that one? As for D-Ahole...sure sure...i think your missing the question...what is a good firewall then...a packet sniffer is not a firewall.

I can do it Because A) I have access to technical info and B) I have a jobe were I was trained to do it. I will leave it at that.

<sniff, sniff> What's that I smell?? Kind of smells like BS!

So if I set up a machine with ZA on it you can get through it eh.

Give it a try: 207.71.92.195. Put your name on the main page.

I learn so much from U guys. Very good debates!

I used both ZA and BI but somehow I feel ZA is a better one.

A major item of concern is getting Joe and Jane to protect themselves in the first place. Despite BI's shortcomings, it is better than nothing at all. I am shocked and amzed how often I hear, "The cable people tell me I'm secure so I'm okay.

I gave a training at work and some guy just yammered on about he does not need any of that "snakeoil" because he is "secure" I used the the Sub7 Server (used to demonstate what a trojan was) on the guy's IP and guess what? It connected. To say he was red faced was an understatement.

Too much faith is put in the ISPs and as Steve Gibson demonstarted, they usually don't care if the bills are paid each month.

if you rented a house (like an ISP), you'd hope for a lock on the door to protect your items and yourself. but surfers aren't getting anything of equivalence. they are unsuspecting, let loose on the internet... and the internet is let loose on them.
it's really very bad people are not given notices or programs on internet security automatically. ISPs don't want to talk about this much because it deters users and can become complicated. so users take pot luck. they at least deserve a basic education to what they are getting themselves into.

Gibson usually has some valid points but I now take whatever he says with 5kg of salt. Ever since that bit about 'finely hand crafted IP packets'. I find it more useful to read other websites which offer the same info with less BS.

<<To anyone who is still stubborn enough to insist that BlackICE Defender is actually good for something: PLEASE do not write to me. I don't want to hear it. I'm a scientist who will not find your mystic beliefs to be compelling. I respect your right to your own opinions, no matter how blatantly they fly in the face of logic and reality. That is, after all, the nature of faith. Happy computing. I suggest prayer.>>>

From here.

I guess that means he doesn't like BID. :Q

All quiet on the home front. ZA has turned away a few port scans and the usual, so far he no one has even managed to get a connection let alone test ZA.

Steve Gibson is a loon.
He has been after Network Ice ever since they wouldn't let him have some of their booth space/present at a major convention.

have a look at this.
