Some of the advantages BBM has over texting is no 160 character limit, group chats, ability to send pics/vids/voice messages without needed to send a MMS (believe it or not, not all carriers even today offer MMS messaging options, especially in the developing world). Blackberries seem to be very popular in the developing world as well. I sold my old Tour on ebay to a guy in Vietnam who unlocks them and resells them.

Whatsapp has the advantage of being able to msg people on android or ios so basically a universal txt msg app, BBM is hardly a compelling reason anymore.

I know it's hard to explain, but even though I use whatsapp and pingchat everyday for cross platform messaging, it just doesn't feel as polished as BBM does. I'm really looking forward to iOS' new messaging platform in iOS5, but that will exclude everyone I chat with who's not on an iPhone. I hope Apple opens the platform up and encourages developers to build versions for Android, WM7, and Blackberry.

Cheap price, usually free with a contract. BBM and a good keyboard so they can text 3000 times a day...

Yeah, whatsapp is terrible. Slow and unreliable in my experience
