BlackBerry Ltd. BB.T -16.08% expects to report a hefty operating loss of nearly $1 billion in its fiscal second quarter due to an inventory buildup of unsold smartphones, and will be laying off 4,500 employees as its turnaround efforts continue to falter.
It said it sold just 3.7 million smartphones in the latest quarter. BlackBerry said most of those devices were older phones, not the newer ones on the BlackBerry 10 operating system.
BlackBerry is seeking to run a quick sales process in the hopes of finding a buyer for the company by November, people familiar with the matter said earlier this month.
BlackBerry, which once controlled more than half of the U.S. market for phones that handle email and Web-browsing, now has about a 3% market share, according to research firm IDC.
Same stuff. BB has cash, no debt, they "have" future devices that will totally sell well unlike the previous devices.
BlackBerry said Friday that it will lay off 4,500 employees, or 40 percent of its global workforce, as it reports a nearly $1 billion second-quarter loss a week earlier than the results were expected.
BB is pretty well dead, if someone wants a mobile OS, they can either use or fork Android. BB's brand is too damaged to sell to anyone. The company has bee for sale for years now, with no takers, I suspect the next thing they'll do is shut down the phone division.
Judging from the lack of response... it does seem like no one gives a @#%@#%.
Its a shame because I live where RIM is headquartered and know a few people that work for them. I gave up my blackberry 9700 when I dropped it 14 ft onto concrete and it still worked, but not very well. The biggest shame imo, is that Blackberry hires a lot of graduates from the local uuniversities.
Its too bad they put themselves in this fate. It started with the Playbook haha.
Yeah, that was the moment I KNEW they were dead. We all suspected they were dead, but that just proved it.I still can't believe Blackberry released a tablet that couldn't do email.
I still can't believe Blackberry released a tablet that couldn't do email.
At this point, I think Blackberry should drop the OS, switch to Android + some custom bits (like the keyboard) and their security/email magic built in.
I think a lot of companies and even some people who would go for that. As of now, BB is dead. Even my most diehard BB friends have switched to iOS or Android.
Not even the BB cheerleader from the other thread is trying any more.Judging from the lack of response... it does seem like no one gives a @#%@#%.
The $9 offer is right in the ballpark. In fact, it's higher than the $8 and change at which BBRY is currently.Faster than expected. Is that a good deal for blackberry? Their stock price is taking a beating so it looks like it.
