my blackberry took a swim last night and it's now completely dry.

Whenever I apply power to it (insert battery or USB), the little notification LED at top right glows red for 5seconds and then goes off.
Pressing the power button doesn't get it to turn on.

Have any of you seen this 5 second red LED to know what it means?

I think it means that you have an expensive paperweight now. Sorry.

Take it in and see if they can service it or if your phone insurance covers it. If not, then try taking it apart (with the battery out, of course) and cleaning the circuit boards _gently_ with a Q-Tip and some rubbing alcohol. Note that this is a last resort when you have no other choice than to write the phone off.

It would take more than a night to COMPLETELY dry it out.

Although it may appear dry on the surface there's plenty of moisture inside the device that would take a while to completely evaporate.

I would have personally waited up to a week before turning it on.

Basically, you're fvcked.

yep. you are a super tool for turning it on after one night. blow compressed air through it and wait at LEAST a week before you turn it on again. there is still hope.

my car stereo filled up with water when i left it outside for a rainstorm. i took it apart, blew compressed air through it, waited 8-9 days, and it worked perfectly fine.

The light comes on for 5 secs when you turn it on normally. Your screen is probably fvcked...as well as probably other parts of it.
