i know this is a pretty old model (came out in 2006 i think?) but i've got a few questions on it.

Does it have blackberry messenger?
what are the main disadvantages for this as opposed to a newer model blackberry curve?

BB Messenger: YES

8100 vs the 8900 Curve:

Curve has all the following in it's favour:
- 4.6 OS
- GPS & WiFi (8100 can have one or the other, not both)
- Twice the Application/OS memory
- Current device means it has more apps/support than 8100

ok, so the reasons i want a blackberry are for the blackberry messenger and push email. ( since i have an ipod touch for music/videos)

so since those are my only reasons, there's nothing wrong with getting a pearl 8100 right? the plan is much much cheaper than the plans with the newer models

Yeah, I used Suretype for years(7130, then 8100/8120) before I moved back to full QWETRTY with the Bold, then Storm. It's a good way to type on a small form factor. I say pick up the 8100, it will do all you need. Just make sure you update to the latest 4.5 OS if you're picking up a used model.

The screen is pretty tiny, so ready long emails or any text on it isn't so great. But if you use that stuff sparingly then it should work fine for you.
