No, I don't unless they have been thru radiation/chemo, but a lot of them wear weave. As to perms, for most of us, its an issue of ease/time. I wear my hair in a ponytail 6 days a week and a perm allows for minimal fuss. The ypical cycle for perms/touchups is 6 weeks and in this day and age lye is no longer used.

<--- black dude

I remember my mom used to perm my sisters hair when we were little. Always remember that shit smelling NASTY and my sister complaining that it burned. Thankfully me and my brother can just keep a nice short caesar going on and be done with it.

Shes been through it all: extensions, wigs (without cutting off her hair), perms, etc. Since we've gotten older, she has stopped with the perms and just lets her hair grow out and puts it into a pony tail. My mom just wears cornrows now and throws a wig over it when she goes out (changes the wig to what she feels like wearing).

Black women ware wigs because they have nappy hair that they don't like to wash or comb 'cause if they gots there hair 'did' then it's cemented together with wax.

Everyone knows this.

lol at Thanksgiving dinner my mom was talking about watching the news for women and their wigs to be falling out at these so called Black Friday sales.

As a black woman, I'm shaking my head at this thread.
Clue us in then. 😉

Yes, I work with two black women who have really kinky hair and they both wear wigs occasionally. At first, I had complimented one of them on their hair, and she let me know right off that it was a wig. I must say it was well done, I would never have guessed it was a wig.

But obviously when you see a black woman (or any woman) with short hair one day and long hair on the weekend, it's a wig. Look at Halle Berry or Rihanna for example, definitely wig wearers at times.

beyonce is all natural and has the best black hair of ALL TIME

My second employer's wife is from a Central American country, she shaves her head (bics it, not no-guard). Think I've seen her with long hair once, possibly a wig.

Very informative...

While Dark & Lovely makes a no Lye relaxer, the majority of perms are performed using products that have Lye in them. As they work much better. Chris Rock's Good Hair goes into pretty great depth about perm products & Lye.

I was hanging out with a group of primarily black people. It got hot inside the room and several of the black girls took off their wigs to expose very short hair.

I had a WTF moment and asked them about it. They told me that most black women cut their hair very short and wear wigs.

True?

I've just heard black hair is a huge pain in the ass to do stuff like straighten and stuff like that... So this doesn't surprise me, I would definitely take a wig over taking 2 hours to "get ready" in the morning.

Of course, they could always just sport a 'fro if they want.

Un hello! Real live black woman here. Unless you understand our culture and history, don’t try and speak about it please.
