KTBS 3 News has confirmed that criminal charges have been filed after a Winnsboro woman set herself on fire and claimed that she was the victim of racially-motivated hate crime.

5th District Attorney Matt Lancaster tells KTBS 3 News that Sharmeka Moffitt, 20, faces two felony charges. The charges are one count of terrorizing and one count of false swearing.

An arraignment date has been set for April 23rd. If convicted, she faces hefty fines and up to 15 years in prison.

In October 2012, Moffitt was rushed to LSU Hospital in Shreveport after authorities responded to a 911 call at Civitan Park in Winnsboro.

Authorities say Moffitt alleged that she had been attacked by three men in white hoodies.

Moffitt also told police the men doused her in a flammable liquid and set her on fire.

Summary: Woman got into BIG trouble with the law because she allegedly said she was being attacked by three men in white hoodies and said they set her on fire, wrote N**** word onto her vehicle. She wasted all the time, effort, and resource from various law enforcement agencies AND set up a very explosive racially charged situation in a small town. BECAUSE of all of that, she is being charged with felony crimes, not just set herself up on fire alone.

You know, because typically people who suffer from mental disorders like Schizophrenia make up monumental lies such as "three white men in hoodies attacked me" and are also known to harm themselves if they are having an episode.

This woman could very well be sick. There might be some sort of mental therapy that could be offered to her in a more specialized detainment setting that isn't a prison.

He didn't even make a statement about why she got in trouble. He is purely evaluating this from a mental health standpoint.

Why don't you show everyone your true color. Why don't you tell them your excuses "it was not a big deal, happend all the time at schools" about the perps that gang up and beat up other students in a high school from Philly? One of the person who is involved in this case said something like this on TV "If a person who hold up a bank and later claimed mental illness, he/she will face felony charges/jail time, it does not matter under the law".

Just because the DA said she was getting charged with those felonies doesn't mean she is going to be found guilty of those felony counts. Her defense team can use her mental health status to try and get a plea bargain or a lesser sentence.

Standard legal process stuff. I know in your world the DA says its a felony and then they go to jail...but that's not how it works.
