Well I have this great black shirt and a red tie that I just purchased the other day, and I wore it to an interview today. A friend of mine kind of gave me a hmmm about it and said that it wasn't something HE would wear... another person at work said it was somewhat of a mafia look haha!

So is that perfectly fine? Have a committed a fashion faux pas?! :Q

I'd say it would lower your chances of landing the job, but if your resume is solid, it should be ok.

Then again, i see in your sig that you have a BA in Cinema studies.. So you're probably not going for a "normal" job, or your applying at Mcdonalds, so you'll probably be fine.

Only acceptable if tie says "rock out with your cock out" in vertical letters on it.

"hang out with your wang out" would also be acceptable.

I suppose it would depend on the job. If you were looking to get on in the accounting department of a Fortune 500 company, I'd laugh you out of the office. If you're the manager of a nightclub, that'd be different. I have no clue what a "Cinema Studies" major does, so I have no clue what sort of job you were applying for.

Haha, you guys are right, a cinema studies degree doesn't get you anywhere. I am actually going for my BA in communications right now btw...

But anyhow, the position was for a helpdesk for a company called Collegis. They do support for students and faculty's computers and online testing (etc) systems. They also basically do the IT support that the on site people would normally take care of.

Anyhow, it's not a place where I would need to dress with a tie every day. The shirt is a normal long sleeved shirt, nothing flashy or fancy, and the tie is a standard red with a bit of a texture to it, it's also got a bit of a silk type sheen to it.

How about for that situation?

And I interviewed for well over an hour, the guy really seemed to warm up to me. I believe I'm pretty much in the door. I suppose the attire didn't drag me down too far ;).

your louder clothing will make an impression. that won't necessarily be a bad thing.

It is if he looks like a pimp.

If you're interviewing (especially in IT), you should be wearing a suit, unless you're applying for a job in fast food service. Your dress is the first impression you give in an interview. If I were interviewing someone with a casual black shirt and red tie, I wouldn't consider him as a candidate.

It's not a "casual" black shirt. It's a long-sleeved black dress shirt.

How do you people take a crap with your asses puckered so tightly??
