When i go to turn on the computer, it turns on but nothin happens. Do i need a new motherboard? new Processor?

I checked the connection to the monitor, and its connected. Its got integrated video, so its not the video card. Its running on XP pro, but it never gets that far.

any recommended solutions?

First confirm that the keyboard is plugged into the purple port, the mouse in the green port (unless they're USB), and that the 115-volt / 230-volt selector switch on the rear of the power supply is set for the right voltage.

If something's faulty, I'd guess the power supply first. To start with, look into the power supply from the rear while the system is powered up. Does the power supply's fan run? I'm asking because I have a similar HP sitting on my living-room carpet, and guess what was wrong with it? Yeah. :p

Another test you can do: unplug all the drives from their data & power cables and see if the system can POST now. If so, then leave the drives unplugged from the data cables, but attach their power cables, then power up the system again and see if it still can POST. If so, then the PSU is evidently able to power up the drives, and now you can shut it off and begin hooking up the data cables one at a time until it stops POSTing again. Worth a shot, anyway :)

okay, i checked, all the fans in the computer are running. I did a visual check for the capacitors, and they seem ok. Anything else?

If i was to start purchasing parts to repair the comp, what part should i purchase first? Should i buy a new Mobo to start or something else?

thanks.

edit-- i forgot to mention, all the indicator lights at the front of the PC are on also.

Pull all cards and cables out of the board except the basics, ie - leave CPU/chipset fans connected and video. Then what?

Turn off, take all memory out - does it beep different when powered on?

I pull all the cards excepts the basics, no difference. Just black screen.

I pull all the memory, turn it on and get some beeping, then it goes silent.

what now?

Thanks for the help once again,.

Is there a P4 power connector on the board? If so, unplug and re-seat it. What all is left plugged in at this point?

I am guessing the P4 power connector is the one that plugs into the mobo from the power supply? I unplugged it and re-seated it. no effect.

The things that are plugged in..

The monitor is connected since its got onboard video, all drives have been disconnected. all cards are pulled.
i reinserted the memory.

anything else to try?

something similar happened to me recently. turns out my CPU was toasted...I had to test each component individually and finally switched the cpu and found it was indeed the culprit, so if you have any parts you can test with, that's probably your best chance to evalate the situation....

just offering my suggestion....

The last HP Pavilion I saw act like that ended up being the motherboard. Granted this was a 2 year old machine running a 1.4gig AMD but one day it worked fine and the next it did what yours does. I would test the CPU in a known good machine, that would help narrow it down.

Damn... I have the same probem.

I left my computer on last night went to school and got home around 3 PM. turned off my pc. turned it back on a few hours later to listen to music. 30 mins later my computer just retarts on its own. ok? not normal. left it off for 30min. turned it back on and now my comp starts freezing up. try to re install windows... now its shutting off! ouch... this really hurts as I have things to turn in for school and whatnot.

Specs:
Intel 3Ghz Socket T
1 G RAM
2x 200GB Hard Drives
Audigy Sound Card

I try to get to the BIOS by repidly pressing F2 and some screen poped up [ with the specs etc] and at the bottom it said that the system was shut do due to overheating etc. So i bought some new thermal compound paste and removed the old one. [alcohol with clog]. When I turn on my pc now my monitor would not display anything nor would my mouse or keyboard lid.

Forgot to mention. I try to reset the BIOs [ by switching the BIOs thingy located around the bottom of the memory slots ] and reinstall them with my intel CD.
